  • Demonstrated expertise in structure-activity relationship-driven design, ADME optimization, and multi-parameter optimization across multiple programs.
  • Experience directing contract research organization-based chemistry programs, including synthetic route planning, vendor oversight, and delivery management.
  • Working knowledge of artificial intelligence and machine learning design tools, with the ability to critically interpret and challenge computational outputs.
  • Familiarity with structure-based drug design and the ability to read and apply protein-ligand structural data.
  • Experience operating in SWAT team, rapid-response, or focused asset team environments.
Responsibilities
  • Design and optimize drug candidates using deep structure-activity relationship intuition, multi-parameter optimization, and ADME-embedded design principles.
  • Integrate artificial intelligence and machine learning-generated design proposals with medicinal chemistry judgment by critically evaluating computational outputs.
  • Partner with computational chemistry colleagues to close design-make-test-analyze cycles rapidly and contribute to defining subsequent design iterations.
  • Provide strategic oversight of contract research organization synthesis programs by defining compound lists, reviewing synthetic routes, and ensuring quality and delivery timelines.
  • Embed selectivity, developability, and intellectual property considerations into design decisions from the outset.
  • Interpret structural biology data, including X-ray and cryo-electron microscopy data, in partnership with structural biology contacts to guide optimization.
  • Monitor competitive chemical matter and emerging chemistry approaches and proactively apply new methods.
  • Contribute to artificial intelligence and machine learning training datasets by ensuring experimental data is captured in standardized, decision-ready format.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in one or more therapeutic areas across the Takeda Research portfolio.

FDA approves Takeda's Orzeyful, first medicine to treat underlying cause of narcolepsy type 1

The US Food and Drug Administration has approved Takeda's ORZEYFUL (oveporexton) for treating narcolepsy type 1 in adults. The oral medication is the first orexin receptor 2 agonist approved to address the underlying cause of the disease rather than individual symptoms. Narcolepsy type 1 is a chronic neurological disease affecting approximately 120,000 people in the US. It is driven by orexin deficiency and causes excessive daytime sleepiness, cataplexy, cognitive symptoms and disrupted sleep. Clinical trials showed adults taking ORZEYFUL experienced significant improvements across the full range of symptoms compared to placebo. Takeda is preparing for the US launch, which will proceed following completion of the Drug Enforcement Administration scheduling process. The company describes the approval as potentially redefining how narcolepsy type 1 is managed.

AI drug developer Accipiter Bio quietly tops up seed round with $10.5M

Seattle-based biotech startup Accipiter Biosciences has raised an additional $10.5 million, less than a year after emerging from stealth with $12.7 million. The funding, from existing investors including Flying Fish Partners and Takeda, will accelerate the company's drug development programmes. The startup uses AI tools developed at the University of Washington's Institute for Protein Design to engineer proteins that can bind multiple cellular targets simultaneously. The company has expanded to 22 employees, including researchers who worked under Nobel laureate David Baker. Accipiter Bio has partnerships with Pfizer and Gilead Sciences-owned Kite Pharma, with potential milestone payments exceeding $330 million. The additional funding will enable the company to advance three or four drug candidates into clinical trials, focusing on immunology and oncology.
