Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree in Nursing and two years of clinical experience are required.
  • A valid Registered Nurse license in good standing with the State of Michigan is required.
  • Advanced nursing-specific certification is preferred.
  • Department-specific certifications such as PALS, BLS, or ACLS may be required.
  • Strong leadership, organization, and communication skills are required.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal communication, conflict-resolution, and team-leadership abilities are required.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving ability is required.
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and demonstrate accountability for assignments is required.
  • Ability to use job-relevant software such as Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Visio is required.
  • Ability to organize and analyze data is required.
  • Fluent spoken and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of regulatory standards and ability to assess their impact on the organization are required.

Responsibilities
  • Function as the clinical liaison and day-to-day leadership resource for staff, physicians, and management.
  • Maintain unit standards and foster a positive team environment as a role model, mentor, coach, and resource person.
  • Assist managers in attracting, developing, maintaining, and retaining qualified staff members.
  • Assist with hiring, orientation, performance monitoring and evaluation, problem solving, employee counseling, staffing, payroll, and budget activities.
  • Serve as a contact for internal and external customers.
  • Maintain a safe environment of care, implement new processes, and monitor ongoing processes to meet quality standards.
  • Evaluate the quality and appropriateness of care.
  • Conduct or facilitate audits for accreditation, regulatory requirements, and organizational standards.
  • Coordinate day-to-day unit operations, including patient placements and staff assignments.
  • Assume responsibility for staffing and scheduling personnel and ensure appropriate utilization of personnel.
  • Coordinate department staff schedules with manager input as needed.
  • Adjust department staffing daily to address staffing needs, volume changes, and call-ins.
  • Facilitate staff attendance at organizational committees and meetings.
  • Manage staffing levels to help the department achieve its budget.
  • Participate in projecting staffing needs and assist in creating staffing plans with the manager or director.
  • Approve or deny paid time off.
  • Follow organizational staffing policies and communicate with staff about scheduling requests and issues.
  • Act as a clinical expert resource and maintain positive relationships and teamwork across the healthcare team.
  • Maintain and provide input into guidelines, policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Act as the first responder for clinical and service-recovery issues.
  • Provide guidance and supervision to personnel accountable to the nurse manager.
  • Provide ongoing performance feedback and monitor staff performance daily.
  • Work with the manager to develop personal development plans, including follow-up and mentoring.
  • Evaluate personnel performance and provide or collate peer input for evaluations.
  • Communicate staff behavior and performance issues to the manager and participate in employee discipline processes.
  • Participate in employee evaluation processes at the manager's discretion.
  • Co-facilitate shared-governance meetings and mentor the staff chair.
  • Facilitate charge-nurse and other unit meetings and report to the nurse manager.
  • Participate in recruitment, selection, and retention of personnel, including assisting the manager with interviews.
  • Create and support an environment that encourages innovation and creativity.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Master's degree in Nursing is preferred.
  • Previous management experience is preferred.
  • Formal or informal leadership experience is preferred.
  • Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certification through PQF or NCC is required within six months of completing intermediate fetal monitoring for Unit Coordinators in Labor and Delivery or Mother/Baby/Antepartum at Bronson Methodist Hospital and Bronson Battle Creek.
