ABB partners with Syre to automate circular polyester recycling plant in Vietnam

Syre has partnered with ABB to scale circular polyester recycling at a proposed facility in Vietnam's Gia Lai province. The agreement will assess how ABB's automation, electrification and digital technologies can be adapted for polyester recycling operations. The collaboration will run alongside detailed engineering for Syre's plant, which aims to recycle polyester from used textiles and industrial waste into new material. Construction is expected to begin in 2027. Syre launched publicly two years ago and has since established an R&D facility in North Carolina, reaching multi-tonne production of circular PET chips in 2025. The partnership with ABB brings industrial expertise to help scale textile-to-textile recycling, which can lower climate impacts and reduce dependency on virgin materials as the industry moves towards circular value chains.

ABB integrates NVIDIA Omniverse into RobotStudio for virtual robot training

ABB Robotics is integrating NVIDIA Omniverse simulation libraries into its RobotStudio software to improve virtual-to-physical robot training. Global manufacturers including Foxconn and US SME platform WORKR are piloting the technology to support precision manufacturing and cost reduction. The development aims to narrow the gap between virtual robot simulations and real-world performance in industrial settings. ABB claims the technology achieves 99% simulation accuracy, potentially reducing commissioning costs for manufacturers. ABB shares recently closed at CHF66.58, with a one-year return of 36.9%. The integration targets both large manufacturers and smaller firms that typically struggle with complex robotics deployments, potentially expanding RobotStudio's addressable market. The partnership supports ABB's strategy to increase higher-margin software and service revenue across its automation portfolio.

Samsung leads $13.6M funding in GridBeyond's virtual power plant tech for AI data centres

GridBeyond, an Irish energy startup, has raised €12 million in equity funding led by Samsung Ventures, with participation from ABB and Yokogawa. The company develops virtual power plant technology to address power grid constraints facing AI data centres. GridBeyond's platform uses software to coordinate energy storage systems and industrial loads, smoothing peak demand that can destabilise electricity grids. The company currently manages over 1 GW of renewable energy assets and several GW of industrial demand-side loads globally. Founded in Ireland, GridBeyond has expanded to Australia, California, Japan and the United Kingdom. Its battery storage systems respond within seconds, compared to minutes for traditional peak power plants, enabling grid stabilisation and power trading whilst reducing data centre grid connection approval times.

DG Matrix raises $60M for solid-state transformers to streamline data centre power

DG Matrix, a solid-state transformer startup, has raised $60 million in a Series A round led by Engine Ventures, with participation from ABB, Cerberus Ventures, Chevron Technology Ventures and others. The company recently announced a deal to supply its Interport device to Exowatt for powering data centres. The Interport acts as a power router, handling up to 2.4 megawatts of connections from multiple sources including solar panels and batteries. It can replace traditional bulky power conversion equipment, condensing two four-by-30 foot skids into a single four-by-four foot device whilst improving efficiency from 82-90% to 95-98%. DG Matrix plans to roll out initial units in June. Data centres represent 90% of its current pipeline, with the company also targeting EV fleet charging and remote community electrification projects.
