Requirements
  • A high school diploma, General Educational Development credential, or equivalent is required.
  • Less than one year of experience in a health care setting or completion of a certified nurse assistant course is preferred.
  • Experience as a paramedic or emergency technician is preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology at medium proficiency is required.
  • The ability to communicate cooperatively and effectively with patients, family members, employees, and others is required.
  • The role requires the physical ability to stand and walk constantly; lift, carry, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, handle, and grasp frequently; push, pull, climb, balance, and crawl occasionally; and sit rarely.
  • The role requires constant feeling, talking, hearing, repetitive motions, and eye, hand, and foot coordination.
Responsibilities
  • Collect pertinent patient data, including vital signs, height and weight, and food and fluid intake and output.
  • Report abnormal findings to the Registered Nurse and patient care team.
  • Participate in care planning and the nursing report process.
  • Incorporate patient and family rights into care decision-making.
  • Use standardized techniques to keep patients and families informed.
  • Provide personal care, including bathing, oral care, and skin care.
  • Assist patients with eating and hydration, grooming, dressing, and toileting.
  • Apply safe patient-handling techniques during ambulation, range-of-motion activities, and use of assistive and prosthetic devices.
  • Maintain a clean, orderly, and safe environment of care.
  • Apply standard and transmission-based precautions and infection-control techniques.
  • Report patient progress toward goals and outcomes to the Registered Nurse.
  • Document all care in the patient record.
  • Collect patient data, complete personal care, perform point-of-care testing such as whole-blood glucose testing, turn and position or mobilize patients, and assist with patient needs during transitions within the acute-care stay.
  • Perform technical procedures such as blood draws and electrocardiography.
  • Collaborate with Materials Coordinators regarding the use, stocking, and storage of supplies.
  • Provide activity-companion services for patients requiring one-to-one observation when requested.
