  • A Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university, or one to two years of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities
  • Recruit qualified sales personnel and ensure customer retention and profitability for the used-vehicle profit center.
  • Appraise, purchase, recondition, display, and merchandise used-vehicle inventory.
  • Forecast monthly and annual sales, gross profit, and key expense goals and objectives.
  • Hire, motivate, counsel, and monitor the performance of all used-vehicle sales employees.
  • Prepare and administer the annual operating forecast and budget for the used-vehicle sales department.
  • Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local regulations affecting used-vehicle sales.
  • Direct and schedule department employees' activities to ensure proper staffing.
  • Help salespeople set realistic monthly goals and provide support to meet them.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor prospecting and sales-control systems for potential buyers.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor follow-up systems for used-vehicle purchasers.
  • Maintain vehicle inventory and conduct local market analyses to determine which vehicles to stock.
  • Process salesperson commission sheets daily and monitor used-vehicle sales payroll records.
  • Conduct daily and weekly sales and sales-training meetings.
  • Establish and enforce product-knowledge standards.
  • Oversee efforts to improve dealership image and customer satisfaction ratings.
  • Help salespeople close deals and ensure complete customer turnover to Finance and Insurance.
  • Communicate with the new-vehicle sales manager regarding units needed for used-vehicle inventory.
  • Inform used-vehicle salespeople about new inventory, advertising efforts, and special sales.
  • Review advertisements and other sources to identify good-quality, low-mileage vehicles.
  • Enforce the predetermined day-turn policy.
  • Appraise all incoming used vehicles.
  • Ensure cosmetic and mechanical reconditioning within dealership cost and time limitations.
  • Plan and control the display of used vehicles.
  • Establish and control wholesaling activities.
  • Establish delivery procedures, including an introduction to the service department and scheduling of the first service appointment.
  • Assist with advertising campaigns and other promotions.
  • Monitor auto-auction activity and prices and attend auctions regularly.
  • Approve auction paperwork and provide purchase documentation to the office.
  • Notify the used-vehicle department manager of anticipated purchase deliveries.
  • Track auction-purchase results and compare auction-vehicle gross profits with trade-in gross profits.
  • Develop and maintain outside wholesaler and retailer sources for buying and selling vehicles.
  • Handle customer complaints according to dealership guidelines.
  • Attend managers' meetings.
  • Maintain a professional appearance.
  • Perform other assigned tasks.
