Requirements
  • A high school diploma or General Education Development degree is required.
  • No prior experience is needed.
  • Basic computer skills are required.
  • The employee must have access to a phone at all times.
  • The employee must be able to read and understand operating instructions for store equipment, including electronic cash registers.
  • The employee must be able to operate a cash register for up to 8 hours or longer.
  • The employee must be able to lift 25 pounds at least once during a shift.
  • The employee must have good oral communication skills.
  • The employee must be able to perform basic mathematical calculations to make change, complete shift reports, and account for products during vendor check-in.
  • The employee must pass pre-employment background and drug screening.
  • The employee must be able to stand, walk, handle or finger items frequently, reach outward frequently, reach above the shoulder occasionally, bend occasionally, and lift or carry items up to 20 pounds occasionally.
Responsibilities
  • Receive payments by cash, check, credit card, voucher, or automatic debit.
  • Issue receipts, refunds, credits, and change to customers.
  • Count cash drawers at the beginning of shifts and ensure adequate change is available.
  • Greet customers entering the store.
  • Maintain clean and orderly checkout areas.
  • Establish or identify prices and tabulate bills using calculators, cash registers, or optical price scanners.
  • Issue trading stamps and redeem food stamps and coupons.
  • Resolve customer complaints and answer questions about procedures or policies.
  • Cash checks for customers.
  • Weigh items sold by weight to determine prices.
  • Calculate total payments received during a time period and reconcile them with total sales.
  • Compute and record transaction totals.
  • Sell tickets and other items to customers.
  • Bag, box, wrap, or gift-wrap merchandise and prepare packages for shipment.
  • Process merchandise returns and exchanges.
  • Request information or assistance using paging systems.
  • Stock shelves and mark prices on shelves and items.
  • Compile and maintain non-monetary reports and records.
  • Monitor checkout stations to ensure adequate cash and appropriate staffing.
  • Offer carry-out service after transactions.
  • Work assigned shift hours and accurately record hours on the time clock and time ticket report.
  • Follow city, county, state, and federal regulations and company policies.
  • Provide prompt and courteous customer service.
  • Perform tasks assigned by the store manager or assistant manager.
  • Notify management of cash discrepancies, personnel situations, and policy violations affecting store operations.
  • Operate the shift within company guidelines to achieve sales and profit goals.
  • Record all sales at the time of purchase.
  • Record markups, markdowns, spoilage, and store use of merchandise according to company procedures.
  • Prepare and complete shift-checkout reports as instructed.
  • Follow vendor check-in procedures.
  • Maintain a low cash drawer and use the safe as instructed.
  • Perform cleaning duties, including cleaning windows and checkout areas, cleaning carts, sweeping floors, dusting shelves, and removing trash.
  • Clean the parking lot and surrounding grounds.
  • Perform other job-related tasks as required.
