Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical or mechanical engineering (electrical engineering preferred)
  • Understanding of DC/AC test methodologies
  • Experience using LabVIEW with oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, and other electronic measurement systems
  • Ability to conduct repeatable test campaigns and deliver accurate reports to engineering teams
  • Skilled in analyzing test data, with the ability to recommend design improvements

Responsibilities
  • Develop a strong understanding of VEIR’s use of HTS in cable development
  • Learn DC/IC and AC loss testing methodologies for cable designs
  • Get up to speed with VEIR’s LabVIEW code base and test measurement instrumentation
  • Execute test procedures with guidance, while learning how to recognize when tests are running successfully versus when issues need troubleshooting
  • Grow technical skills in instrumentation, coding, and data analytics while building familiarity with VEIR’s test environment
  • Independently own and operate test campaigns from setup through reporting
  • Adapt and pivot test campaigns based on interim results to accelerate learning
  • Deliver clear reports and recommendations that influence cable design decisions
  • Surface opportunities for design improvements through test analysis and collaboration with engineering teams

VEIR develops superconducting power transmission lines using high-temperature superconductors and ambient-air cooling to carry significantly more electricity in a smaller footprint. The lines can transmit 5 to 10 times more power than conventional cables, enabling dense urban grids and easier integration of renewables, data centers, and other high-demand facilities. It works by HTS materials reducing electrical resistance and an air-cooled system that maintains superconductivity without bulky cryogenics. The goal is to expand grid capacity with scalable, cost-efficient, and reliable infrastructure for urban loads and regional upgrades, differentiating itself with compact, air-cooled HTS cables.

Microsoft eyes HTS tech for efficient data centers. February 12, 2026 Microsoft is exploring advanced high-temperature superconductors (HTS) as a potential game-changer for power efficiency in their data centers. These superconductors offer the promise of nearly lossless power delivery due to their ability to eliminate electrical resistance when maintained at cryogenic temperatures. Unlike conventional copper or aluminum wires, HTS can carry higher power densities without the accompanying heat losses. Alistair Speirs, General Manager of Azure infrastructure, highlighted the potential benefits of HTS systems, noting their ability to overcome the constraints of traditional power systems which require extensive infrastructure expansions. By reducing the spatial footprint needed for power distribution, HTS technology could lead to more compact and environmentally friendly data centers. Currently, Microsoft's investment in HTS is still in the early stages, as the cost and availability of superconducting materials present challenges. Microsoft has partnered with Veir, an HTS power delivery firm, which demonstrated promising results with a 3-megawatt transmission in a simulated environment. However, commercial deployment remains a distant goal. While the technology holds potential for a paradigm shift in data center power management, Speirs cautions that further testing and validation are needed to build confidence in HTS systems.
