Cambium develops advanced materials for defense and aerospace by using a platform that re-engineers polymers from first principles to create high-performance resins and composites. Its phthalonitrile resins are thermosets engineered for extreme environments with high service temperatures and strong thermal stability, used in missiles, space and satellites, and hypersonic aircraft. The company differentiates itself through a molecular-level design approach within a unified development platform that emphasizes survivability, performance, and manufacturability. Its goal is to provide durable, reliable materials that enable advanced systems to operate under demanding conditions.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • June 3, 2026 ApexShield 3000 broadened Cambium beyond resins into coatings and EMI shielding.
  • July 2026 SentinelOps expanded the addressable market into aviation laser protection and directed-energy defense.
  • Mooresville's 60,000-square-foot plant starts 2026, quadrupling US SHD capacity and shortening customer lead times.

What critics are saying

  • Hexcel, Toray, Solvay, and Park Aerospace already dominate qualified aerospace materials supply.
  • ApexShield 3000's solvent-based chemistry faces safety, emissions, and handling burdens in production.
  • If defense programs or hypersonics demand stalls, Cambium's capital-heavy expansion can outrun revenue by 2027.

What makes Cambium unique

  • Cambium's phthalonitrile platform targets 600°F service, compressing qualification from years to months.
  • The January 5, 2026 $100 million Series B funded rapid scale with 8VC and Lockheed Martin Ventures.
  • SHD acquisition gave Cambium aerospace-qualified prepreg, film, and adhesives manufacturing across the US, UK, and Europe.

Cambium launches ApexFrame 5000 film adhesive for high-temperature bonding up to 600°F

Cambium, a developer of advanced composites and specialty materials, has launched ApexFrame 5000, a phthalonitrile-based film adhesive designed for high-temperature bonding applications. The product delivers operational performance up to 600°F (315°C), with short-duration performance reaching 800°F (427°C). The adhesive targets aerospace, defence, and space applications requiring extreme thermal resistance. It is solvent-free, room-temperature stable, and requires no freezer storage, reducing logistics complexity for manufacturers. ApexFrame 5000 is available as an unsupported film adhesive in standard roll widths of 12 inches (300mm) and 38 inches (965mm), with additional options available upon request. The product was developed using Cambium's integrated pipeline, compressing development time from years to months. Cambium operates manufacturing, development, and testing facilities across the US, UK, and EU.

Flying Eyes and Cambium launch anti-laser eyewear for pilots with 2.5+ optical density protection

Flying Eyes Optics and Cambium have partnered to create laser eye protection for professional pilots. The companies will debut SentinelOps laser-blocking lenses in Flying Eyes' headset-compatible frames at ALPA's 70th Air Safety Forum in Washington, D.C., from 14–17 September 2026. Pilots reported 10,994 laser strikes to the FAA in 2025, with more than 330 injuries tracked since 2010. Cambium's lens technology uses a precision notch filter that attenuates 532nm green laser light whilst preserving colour acuity for reading cockpit instruments. Flying Eyes' patented Resilamide temples are 1mm thick and flexible, allowing the eyewear to be worn comfortably under headsets without breaking the ear seal. The lenses will be offered across Flying Eyes' frame lineup.

Cambium launches SentinelOps laser eye protection platform for pilots and military personnel

Cambium, an El Segundo-based advanced materials manufacturer, has launched SentinelOps, a laser eye protection and directed-energy protection technology platform. The first product is protective eyewear designed for commercial and military aviation applications. The platform addresses laser illumination incidents that pose risks to pilots and military personnel. The US Federal Aviation Administration logs tens of thousands of cockpit laser strikes annually, with Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, and Chicago amongst the highest-frequency corridors. SentinelOps technology provides protection across visible and near-infrared spectrum whilst maintaining colour fidelity and visual acuity. The technology can be adapted for eyewear, cockpit windows, and sensor platforms. The product was developed with support from BioMADE, a US Department of Defense organisation, and technical collaboration with Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division.
