Requirements
- Graduate of a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education accredited nursing program with a Master's Degree in Nursing, for the nurse practitioner pathway.
- National certification by one of the recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse certification centers, for the nurse practitioner pathway.
- Must be licensed or eligible for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia, for the nurse practitioner pathway.
- Advanced Practice Registered Nurses must be privileged as first assists and must have Registered Nurse First Assistant certification.
- Basic Life Support certification is required, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion of the department.
- A Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree as a Physician Assistant is required, for the physician assistant pathway.
- Graduate of an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant-approved Physician Assistant training program, for the physician assistant pathway.
- Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants is required, for the physician assistant pathway.
- Must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine or West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine, for the physician assistant pathway.
- Proficiency with computers is required.
- The role requires the ability to work closely with others, work protracted or irregular hours, work around biohazards and infectious diseases, work with or near the deceased, work with hands in water, and work around electrical hazards associated with patient-care equipment.
- The role requires strength and/or stamina for lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, positioning patients, standing, walking, and carrying patients, materials, and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
Responsibilities
- Complete comprehensive patient health evaluations, including biological, social, and psychological assessments, in collaboration with the clinical and faculty team.
- Assess and coordinate the educational and psychosocial needs of surgical urology patients and their caretakers.
- Develop and review plans of care with the clinical team, participate in directing care, and coordinate perioperative care, discharge planning, and post-hospital and ambulatory follow-up.
- Participate in educating residents and medical and nursing students and perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
- Provide healthcare services consistent with state law, professional licensing or certification requirements, and hospital privileges.
- Manage comprehensive and individualized care for surgical urology patients and their families during hospitalization, immediately after discharge, and in the ambulatory setting.
- Complete daily rounds and consultations, including pre-procedure and surgical urology evaluations.
- Complete integrated assessments.
- Participate in perioperative patient management, including first assisting in the operative suite.
- Order additional tests or consultations in collaboration with surgical urology faculty or according to established clinical guidelines and protocols.
- Perform diagnostic tests and communicate their results according to established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
- Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal findings in patient evaluations.
- Perform comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.
- Facilitate patient discharge and follow-up by coordinating appropriate services and tests before outpatient clinic appointments.
- Perform procedures according to established clinical guidelines, protocols for urological surgery, and scope of practice.
- Develop individualized plans of care for surgical urology patients, including teaching, discharge planning, follow-up, and referrals.
- Provide care across the age continuum covered by the individual's education and certification.
- Participate in physician rounds and consultations.
- Identify unstable or complex surgical urology situations and facilitate appropriate intervention in clinic or hospital settings.
- Assist with collecting outcome measures in the clinic and other applicable settings.
- Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of surgery patient and family teaching and collaborate with nursing and clinical staff to complete education plans.
- Demonstrate critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning in clinical decision-making by identifying, evaluating, and managing individual patient and family needs.
- Use equipment safely.
- Base decisions and actions on scientific principles, established standards of care, and research findings.
- Use teaching and learning theory and appropriate teaching strategies to educate nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community.
- Promote an environment that facilitates learning by responding to patient and family preferences, priorities, and readiness to learn.
- Maintain and update clinical knowledge throughout the year and complete identified clinical competencies.
- Serve as a resource for staff caring for surgical urology patients.
- Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel within the area of expertise.
- Mentor nursing personnel at all levels of clinical practice.
- Participate in community programs and distribute literature as appropriate within the area of expertise.
- Communicate with patients, families, physicians, and ancillary services to ensure coordinated and efficient patient care.
- Document plans of care, interventions, and evaluations in the patient's medical record according to hospital and University Health Associates policies and compliance standards.
- Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve patient-outcome-based improvements in care.
- Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in the surgical urology practice that improve patient outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to solve problems and provide professional support.
- Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education.
- Serve as a professional role model.
- Promote innovation in the expanded role when delivering care to surgical urology patients and families in inpatient and ambulatory settings.
- Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
- Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate.
- Participate in the West Virginia University Medicine and University Health Associates Performance Improvement Plan.
- Apply information from performance-improvement activities and change practice as necessary to improve patient care.
- Review and interpret surgical urology data, including patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes as necessary.
- Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
- Assist surgery faculty, administrators, and directors with collecting outcome measures.
- Perform other assigned duties and projects.
Desired Qualifications
- Surgical and/or urology experience is preferred.
- Acute Care or Family Nurse Practitioners are considered.
- A Master's-level degree as a Physician Assistant is preferred.
