(March 24, 2026) - Monument Health Spearfish Hospital announced it has been named among the 2026 Top 100 Rural & Community Hospitals by The Chartis Center for Rural Health. Chartis' annual Top 100 award program honors outstanding performance among the nation's rural hospitals based on the results of the Chartis Rural Hospital Performance INDEX(R). "It's an honor and a privilege for our teams to serve the community," said Thomas Worsley, Spearfish Market President. First Spearfish Hospital Expansion phase complete. March 24, 2026 Phase One construction of the Spearfish Hospital Expansion is complete and Monument Health began caring for patients in its newly opened facility this month. This milestone has long been in the works, requiring the coordination and cooperation of internal and external stakeholders, construction companies, city officials and, especially, Spearfish Caregivers and community members. Seeing it come to life has been incredibly exciting for its entire organization. The addition to Spearfish Hospital includes 19 inpatient rooms, 15 of which are designated for medical surgical care and four for the ICU. The space is lighter, brighter and more modern than what Monument Health had before. Rich blue walls and seafoam green accents create a calm, healing atmosphere with artwork to match. Centrally located nurse stations allow Caregivers to keep a close eye on the patient rooms. Private rooms with individual bathrooms are a meaningful upgrade, both for patient comfort and for safety. On the main floor, 22 Surgery Pre/Post rooms offer flexible bed spaces for patients checking in for surgery, recovering immediately after a procedure, or awaiting discharge or transfer. These rooms are filled with natural light and furnished to feel as welcoming and comfortable as possible. The basement level is home to a brand-new, much larger cafeteria that will serve Caregivers, guests and patients. Caregivers will also enjoy a new Starbucks machine, a small but welcome addition. Phase Two will bring a new surgical wing, with construction expected to take around 14 months. Once that is complete, the final phase will transform the existing surgical wing into a modernized Emergency Department, nearly doubling capacity from 7 to 13 beds. Monument Health is proud of the progress and grateful to the many people who helped bring Phase One across the finish line. There will be more updates as this $80 million project continues to transform health care in the Northern Hills communities and across its organization. Story by Kory Lanphear

March 18, 2026 Rapid City, S.D., (March 18, 2026) - Monument Health Rapid City Hospital has received the American College of Cardiology's NCDR Chest Pain ̶ MI Registry Platinum Performance Achievement Award for 2025, marking 14 consecutive years receiving the honor. Rapid City Hospital is one of only 323 hospitals nationwide to receive the honor. This award recognizes Monument Health's unwavering commitment to delivering the highest level of care for patients experiencing heart attacks. It reflects the dedication of the Cardiology team at Rapid City Hospital to meet-and exceed-rigorous national standards for treatment. By consistently providing care that aligns with the clinical guidelines of the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association, Rapid City Hospital is helping ensure that its patients receive timely life-saving care they deserve when every second matters. To receive the Chest Pain ̶ MI Registry Platinum Performance Achievement Award, Monument Health Rapid City Hospital has demonstrated sustained achievement in the Chest Pain ̶ MI Registry for two consecutive years (2023 and 2024) and performed at the highest level for specific performance measures. Full participation in the registry engages hospitals in a robust quality improvement process using data to drive improvements in adherence to guideline recommendations and overall quality of care provided to heart attack patients. "It is an honor to award Monument Health Rapid City Hospital with the Platinum Performance Award for their valuable national leadership and dedication to meeting comprehensive performance measures in patient care," said Michael C. "The receipt of this award indicates thatMonument Health remains committed to providing top quality, guideline-driven care for heart attack patients. Their success ensures patients are receiving the highest quality cardiovascular care." The Centers for Disease Control estimates that over 800,000 Americans suffer a heart attack each year. A heart attack occurs when a blood clot in a coronary artery partially or completely blocks blood flow to the heart muscle. Treatment guidelines include administering aspirin upon arrival and discharge, timely restoration of blood flow to the blocked artery, smoking cessation counseling and cardiac rehabilitation, among others. "Earning the American College of Cardiology NCDR chest pain-MI registry platinum performance award for the 14th consecutive year represents an extraordinary milestone for Monument Health. Very few hospitals across the country consistently achieve this level of performance in the treatment of heart attack patients," said Joseph Tuma, M.D., FACC, FSCAI, Interventional Cardiologist. "This recognition is a testament to the dedication, collaboration and expertise of our entire Cardiology care team, who remained deeply committed to continuous quality improvement, patient-centered care and a culture of excellence. We are honored to receive this award and proud of the team whose work makes this achievement possible" Chest Pain ̶ MI Registry empowers health care provider teams to consistently treat heart attack patients according to the most current, science-based guidelines and establishes a national standard for understanding and improving the quality, safety and outcomes of care provided for patients with coronary artery disease, specifically high-risk heart attack patients. Partnering with the DOD SkillBridge program. Through its partnership with Elevate Rapid City, Monument Health is participating in the Department of Defense's SkillBridge Military Transition Program. This federal initiative helps Monument Health attract exceptional talent while supporting military families' transition to civilian careers and community membership. SkillBridge, according to its website, is an opportunity for service members to gain valuable civilian work experience through specific industry training, apprenticeships or internships during the last 180 days of service. DOD SkillBridge connects transitioning service members with industry partners in real-world job experiences. The program addresses its critical need to attract and retain Caregivers across all roles within its health care system. Military professionals bring proven leadership skills, discipline and adaptability that translate exceptionally well to health care environments. Monument Health recently welcomed retired Master Sgt. John Karel, PMP, who brings with him over 20 years of distinguished Air Force experience. Most recently he served as Senior Advisor to the Director of Public Works at Yokota Air Base in Western Tokyo, Japan. There, he led 739 engineers in the Air Force's third-largest Public Works Directorate and guided an $89 million construction project that saves $15 million annually in utility costs. John holds an MBA in Finance and began his four month internship this summer in Fiscal Services with Jennifer Schmaltz, VP Finance and Vince King, Director Financial Services. After two and a half months, John pivoted to work with Dave Ellenbecker, VP Facilities Management and Plant Operations and the Project Management team where he will continue until his SkillBridge stint concludes. "What's truly surprised me is how many parallels I've found between Monument Health and the Air Force," John says. "The transition has felt remarkably seamless, especially since both organizations share similar core values. Monument Health's emphasis on the individual Caregiver reflects the same commitment the military had to taking care of its people. That shared ethos has made this shift not just smooth - but meaningful." SkillBridge interns don't just fill positions - they bring their families to become permanent community members and neighbors. This creates lasting community connections that extend far beyond the workplace, directly supporting its mission to impact its communities. Monument Health provide essential relationships and support during one of life's most significant professional transitions, helping service members understand both the similarities and differences between military and civilian health care careers. "The SkillBridge program has been an invaluable experience," John says. "Monument Health has been fantastic, and I've enjoyed working with every Caregiver. Even if a direct employment opportunity doesn't work out, I'll always look back on this time fondly and appreciate being part of this community." John's SkillBridge internship ends Dec. 12, after which he will seek an employment opportunity at an organization of his choosing.
