The Team:
Upstart’s Auto Retail team is on a mission to build the world’s best car buying experience. More than $1 trillion of cars are sold each year in the U.S., yet it consistently ranks as one of the worst consumer experiences in America. Join us to help fix that, and make a big impact in one of the world’s largest industries.
As a Principal Engineeron the Auto Retail team at Upstart, you will work with our product engineering squads to establish the architectural vision, develop the roadmap for cross-cutting components and capabilities, and deliver Upstart credit products to end users.
Position Location - This role is available in the following locations: Remote, San Mateo, Columbus
Time Zone Requirements - This team operates on the all U.S. time zones.
Travel Requirements - This team has regular on-site collaboration sessions. These occur 3 days per quarter at an Upstart office. If you need to travel to make these meetups, Upstart will cover all travel related expenses.
How you’ll make an impact:
- Drive key initiatives to define the future architecture of the Auto Retail product
- Work directly on complex multi-team projects that directly improve user conversion
- Establish new engineering practices and processes that improve overall developer efficiency
- Collaborate with cross-functional partners to influence the technical and product roadmap of the team
What we’re looking for:
- Minimum requirements:
- Have 8+ years of software engineering experience
- Have a track record of creating and leading new initiatives to improve engineering infrastructure and efficiency
- Experience working on a user facing product in a product driven environment
- Ability to identify and improve on gaps in organizational knowledge, tools, and practices
- Excellent communication skills with ability to build consensus amongst multiple stakeholders
- Preferred qualifications:
- Possesses sound business and technical judgment. Thinks in terms of ROI, tradeoffs, and risks. Analytical in areas outside of technology
- Has defined and executed on a longer term (multi-quarter +) technology visions or strategies for multi-team organizations
- Experience with Javascript, Typescript, React.js and Node.js
- Experience working in an agile environment with distributed teams

At Upstart, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. The anticipated base salary for this position is expected to be within the below range. Your actual base pay will depend on your geographic location–with our “digital first” philosophy, Upstart uses compensation regions that vary depending on location. Individual pay is also determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.
In addition, Upstart provides employees with target bonuses, equity compensation, and generous benefits packages (including medical, dental, vision, and 401k).

$180,700—$250,000 USD
