Requirements
  • Basic knowledge of animal care, demonstrated through care of household pets, farm animals, or 4-H animals.
  • Ability to read, write, and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written formats with technical and professional staff.
  • Ability to assist with research support at the level for which the individual is trained.
  • Ability to perform general animal husbandry duties and assist investigative staff with requested needs.
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to drive Division of Comparative Medicine and Oregon National Primate Research Center vehicles on and off campus.
  • Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds and lift approximately 42 pounds to shoulder height.
  • Ability to push and pull heavy wheeled equipment such as cage racks and loaded carts.
  • Ability to move unassisted through animal housing areas in several indoor and outdoor buildings.
  • Sufficient dexterity and manual skills to safely perform or learn basic animal husbandry, animal handling, and health care procedures, including feeding, sanitization, animal capture and restraint, medication administration, and collection of body fluids and tissues.
Responsibilities
  • Conduct routine animal husbandry procedures, including feeding and watering animals.
  • Capture, restrain, and transport animals to support veterinary or investigative procedures.
  • Handle, restrain, identify, and sex common laboratory animals.
  • Sanitize animal housing, shelters, equipment, and facilities.
  • Assist with animal health management, treatment, and diagnostic procedures, including weighing, tuberculosis testing, and blood collections.
  • Assist with facility maintenance.
  • Unload and store animal feed.
  • Assist with group-housed animal capture and processing.
  • Assist with care of animals in the nursery.
  • Provide animal care and environmental enrichment on weekends, during non-regular working hours, or on an overtime basis when required.
  • Inventory and request supplies.
  • Observe animals, recognize abnormalities in physical condition or behavior, and report and record observations.
  • Recognize and report facility problems and perform simple facility maintenance tasks, including replacing drinking water valves, preparing and painting surfaces, and replacing lighting tubes or bulbs.
  • Operate animal-care equipment, including cage washers, floor scrubbers, autoclaves, pressure washers, scales, and veterinary care instruments.
  • Interact professionally with research investigative staff to fulfill their needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • A High School Diploma or GED, with mastery of principles and concepts taught on the job.
  • Six months of related animal experience, certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician level, or two years of indirect laboratory animal experience.
