Requirements
  • A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) credential is required.
  • Must meet Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services-approved state and/or national certification requirements within the required state or CMS timeline.
  • Must hold all applicable state licensure, education, and training required for the role.
  • Must successfully complete the organization’s dialysis training program and CPR certification for continued employment.
  • Must be able to perform direct patient care involving heavy lifting, moving patients, assisting with ambulation, prolonged standing, bending, and handling equipment and solutions weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Must pass the Ishihara color blindness test as a condition of employment, with reasonable accommodations considered if needed.
Responsibilities
  • Provide safe and effective dialysis therapy under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse in accordance with organizational policies, procedures, training, and applicable regulations.
  • Set up and operate hemodialysis machines and maintain a safe and clean working environment.
  • Provide patient-specific education regarding dialysis adequacy measures, disease processes, and vascular access under appropriate supervision.
  • Welcome assigned patients and inquire about their wellbeing since their last treatment.
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency, perform vascular access cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or permitted by state law.
  • Obtain and document pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, vascular access evaluations, and other dialysis treatment information.
  • Initiate and discontinue dialysis treatments according to prescribed orders and established procedures, including blood flow, dialysate flow, reinfusion, hemostasis, and dressing application.
  • Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems as prescribed by physician orders or directed by the registered nurse.
  • Monitor patient responses to dialysis therapy and report significant information or changes in condition to the registered nurse or supervisor.
  • Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming for ultrafiltration goals, treatment time, and ultrafiltration modeling as prescribed.
  • Ensure required safety alarms are enabled and perform machine safety checks according to facility policy.
  • Accurately document vital signs, treatment parameters, interventions, patient responses, treatment sheets, and progress notes.
  • Obtain prescribed laboratory tests and collect, label, prepare, store, and arrange courier collection of laboratory specimens according to required specifications.
  • Clean blood spills and disinfect dialysis machines, chairs, equipment, and surrounding areas according to facility and infection-control policies.
  • Prepare, organize, and use supplies and equipment efficiently, including ordering and inventory activities for the transitional care unit.
  • Monitor patients performing self-care under registered nurse supervision.
  • Assist with training direct patient-care staff on applicable programs under nurse supervision.
  • Maintain environmental integrity and ensure work areas are safe and clean.
  • Perform dialysis machine preparation and alarm testing, including Pressure Holding Testing, and initiate the Solution Delivery System.
  • Complete and document participation in Continuous Quality Improvement activities and enter treatment data into the designated clinical application accurately and promptly.
  • Review treatment sheets for completeness, ensure required nursing signatures are documented, and obtain corrections for omitted entries.
  • Prepare initial patient charts and laboratory requisitions and compile paperwork for appropriate chart placement.
  • Support infection-control audits, reinforce infection-control practices, and provide infection-control education to patients and families under appropriate direction.
  • Follow newly admitted patients through their first four weeks of dialysis and coordinate their transitional dialysis care.
  • Reinforce education about care, treatment options, home dialysis products, and home dialysis benefits under applicable supervision.
  • Coordinate with facility staff to support the patient experience and ensure disciplines are scheduled according to the care plan.
  • Demonstrate peritoneal dialysis setup and assist patients with selecting and transitioning to their preferred treatment modality.
  • Travel between assigned facilities and various community locations and attend regional, business-unit, or corporate meetings when required.
