Requirements
  • High School or GED diploma.
  • Completion of the Minimum Paraprofessional Competencies defined by the Washington State WIC Program within the applicable WIC/Nutrition Policies and Procedures.
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to understand written, oral, diagram, and schedule-based instructions.
  • Ability to write clearly enough to communicate with dietitians, receptionists, WIC coordinators, and WIC participants.
  • Must sign a permanent confidentiality oath covering patient-related information.
  • Must pass a Washington State Patrol background check.
  • Must obtain Basic Life Support CPR certification within 90 days of hire and maintain current certification throughout employment.
  • Must maintain an annual TB test and complete required pre-hire and annual employee health screening.
  • Must receive the required annual influenza vaccine unless an approved medical or religious exemption applies.
  • Ability to travel throughout Western Washington in a timely manner.
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position, including lifting 35 pounds above four feet without assistance and sitting at a computer terminal for extended periods.
Responsibilities
  • Enroll and terminate WIC participants, provide orientation and benefits, and maintain client files.
  • Maintain complete and current WIC charts and statistical program records, including documentation flow sheets, WIC diet records, certification sheets, growth grids, child evaluation sheets, infant birth outcomes, and appointment schedules.
  • Establish professional working relationships with WIC team members and Sea Mar staff.
  • Serve as a liaison between Nutrition/WIC, clinic services, and community services, making appropriate referrals.
  • Assist with clerical and statistical program work.
  • Attend selected clinic, MSS, Preventive Health Services division, and WIC meetings and participate in continuing education.
  • Assist with breastfeeding promotion and community nutrition education, including travel as needed.
  • Interview clients from diverse populations and review and document client history, anthropometric data, laboratory data, and current eating habits.
  • Use standard assessment tools and department procedures to weigh and measure clients, take hematocrits and hemoglobin measurements, plot growth grids, and review dietary evaluations.
  • Compare collected information with program criteria to determine WIC eligibility and nutrition risk factors.
  • Refer clients to appropriate health or community service resources.
  • Identify high-risk clients requiring immediate Dietitian attention, make appropriate referrals, and facilitate appointments.
  • Provide individual and group nutrition education according to program guidelines using appropriate methods and materials.
  • Provide program orientation, explain nutrition requirements, and schedule client appointments based on programmatic and client needs.
  • Determine appropriate food packages, explain the nutrient content of WIC foods, identify contracted food vendors, issue manual or computerized food benefits, and document benefits issued.
  • Maintain patient rights and confidentiality and document vendor and participant complaints and infractions.
Desired Qualifications
  • One year of previous experience as a WIC Clerk and/or in a WIC program.
  • Interest and experience in basic nutrition and childhood development.
  • Bilingual and bicultural English/Spanish capability.
