Requirements
  • Five years of experience working with litigation and legal billing practices, including civil court rules and procedures and state and federal court systems.
  • Three years of legal bill review experience with exposure to multiple lines of business and varying levels of billing complexity.
  • Proficiency in electronic billing platforms, including Bottomline’s LegalX and Legal Exchange.
  • Experience using artificial-intelligence-enabled legal billing and analytics tools to support accurate bill review, identify billing irregularities, and ensure compliance with outside counsel billing guidelines.
  • Ability to analyze artificial-intelligence-generated insights and apply legal judgment to validate billing exceptions, cost trends, and efficiency opportunities.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Adobe PDF.

Responsibilities
  • Audit submitted legal fee and expense invoices promptly, accurately, and efficiently pursuant to applicable litigation and billing guidelines.
  • Review invoices line by line to determine accuracy, reasonableness, and compliance with the agreed fee structure between the company and law firm.
  • Identify and group tasks to evaluate activity progression from case initiation through closure.
  • Collect information from law firms and claims staff to determine the reasonableness of time spent on tasks and complete bill reviews.
  • Identify billing discrepancies using litigation and billing guidelines, industry standards, and litigation history, and reduce invoices accordingly.
  • Discuss, explain, and educate attorneys and claims staff about invoice reductions, the bill review process, and compliance requirements.
  • Advise claim managers, adjusters, and attorneys on billing discrepancies and resolution options.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge for determining the likely legal necessity of insurance defense and coverage-related law firm work.
  • Make timely decisions and negotiate resolutions of billing issues or disputes.
  • Use claim-file and document review to obtain claim-strategy information and apply it during the review process.
  • Amend legal fee and expense invoices as appropriate.
  • Communicate with law firms and operating-unit employees while serving as a technical resource for appeal oversight and discretionary reviews.
  • Participate in calibration and consultation with the Litigation Management Services team.
  • Collaborate with the claims department to improve litigation cost control.
  • Provide consultation and training to claim professionals and stakeholders on legal bill review and related best practices.
  • Drive compliance with partner law firms based on corporate retention and billing policies through trusted strategic partnerships.
  • Provide input on improvement and innovation opportunities and help assess and remove barriers to the team’s success.

W. R. Berkley forms Berkley Meridian through merger of Verus and Vela Insurance

W. R. Berkley Corporation has formed Berkley Meridian, a new specialty insurance business combining Verus Specialty Insurance and Vela Insurance Services. Marlo M. Morrison will serve as president of the new entity. The business will unite underwriting capabilities and expertise across construction, professional liability, garage, casualty, and other specialty lines, focusing on the excess and surplus wholesale broker market. Integration has begun and is expected to continue into early 2027. Morrison joined Verus Specialty Insurance as president in 2019, bringing nearly 30 years of property and casualty insurance experience. W. Robert Berkley, Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of W. R. Berkley Corporation, said the combination will allow the company to leverage expertise and provide a broader suite of solutions. W. R. Berkley, a property casualty insurer, missed revenue expectations in Q2 CY2026, with sales rising just 1.2% year-on-year to $3.72 billion, falling short of the $3.77 billion analyst estimate. The company's net premiums earned reached $3.19 billion, roughly in line with expectations. However, W. R. Berkley exceeded profit forecasts, reporting non-GAAP earnings of $1.27 per share, beating analyst consensus by 17.3%. The combined ratio of 90% also outperformed estimates of 91.4%.
