The Role: Smith-Blair, a Xylem brand, seeks to hire a Mechanical Engineer intern for their Product Engineering department. Smith-Blair is a leading global manufacturer of fittings that join, repair, restrain, tap, and cap pipes for the water, wastewater, gas, oilfield and industrial markets. The Engineering Intern will have the opportunity to build hands-on experience in many different facets of the engineering function such as new product development, quality control, lean manufacturing, continuous improvement, drafting, and many other special projects. The ideal candidate will be a current junior or senior student in pursuit of a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering/Engineering Technology. This position will begin as an internship with the potential to develop into a full-time position after graduation. This position will be located at the Texarkana, Arkansas facility.
Essential Duties/Principal Responsibilities:
- Become involved with all aspects of design, manufacturing, assembly, and production
- Be part of a cohesive mechanical engineering team to collaboratively work on developing new products, troubleshooting problems, and achieving performance, reliability, and cost improvements
- Using SolidWorks and Creo, Design and develop custom mechanical drawings, review, and modify existing drawings
- Convert legacy mechanical drawings into working CAD files (solid models, drawings)
- Through research and investigative work, verify drawing details coincide with BOM’s to ensure accuracy to project specs
- Assist with Windchill Product Data Management (PDM) software implementation
Minimum Qualifications: Education, Experience, Skills, Abilities, License/Certification:
- Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Junior or Senior currently enrolled in ABET accredited BS degree program in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent
- Strong, creative, ability to design simple models and assemblies being aware of fit and clearance
- Strong curiosity to solve problems, desire to dig deeper into understanding the reason why something is not working
- Strong mechanical inclination is a must!
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Able to work independently as well as with a team
- Competent with the entire suite of Microsoft Office 365, including Outlook, Excel, Word, SharePoint
- At least 2 semesters of working with 3D Cad software (preferably Solidworks/Creo)

- Office/Manufacturing Facility: 50/50
- Office Area: Typical climate controlled office environment requiring the use of standard office equipment.
- Manufacturing Area: Subject to loud noises, moving machinery and equipment, and climate changes. Safety glasses are required. Hearing protection may be required in certain areas.
- Standard weekly job hours: 40 hours. Overtime may be required based upon job demands.
