Requirements
  • The candidate must have earned a minimum of 30 credits by the beginning of June 2025.
  • The candidate must be either a current Penn State student or currently enrolled at another institution.
  • All residential mentors are required to stay in the student residence hall during the residential components.
  • The candidate must be able to stay in the residence hall during residential components and participate in both daytime and evening responsibilities; overnight duties may be required on a rotating basis.
  • The candidate must provide their own transportation to/from campuses for departure of field trips or residential stays.
  • The candidate must not schedule classes or hold additional employment while employed by Upward Bound Programs.
Responsibilities
  • Attend classes and provide tutorial support for participants; lead icebreaker activities; supervise students; chaperone weekly trips; attend staff meetings; complete program documentation and evaluations by established deadlines; build a sense of community with Upward Bound participants; and perform any other duties assigned by Upward Bound Programs staff.
  • During virtual days, lead various activities with participants throughout the week.
  • Establish a supportive, encouraging, and welcoming environment in the residence hall; serve as a role model who exhibits sound judgment, maturity, and common sense.
  • Ensure the well-being and safety of all students and other staff members; enforce Upward Bound and University regulations in a consistent and objective manner.
  • Work with a small group of students to complete an assigned project; plan and lead academic, social, and recreational activities; work closely with the program’s teachers, office staff, and other individuals; chaperone groups of students as they participate in activities both on and off campus.
  • Monitor participants; perform regular monitoring duties such as free time check-in, meal check-in, and sick duty as scheduled.
  • Assist with cleanup of the residence hall at the end of the summer program.
Desired Qualifications
  • Preferred candidates will have experience working with youth in a residential setting.
