  • A minimum high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Completion of a scribe training program is required.
  • A minimum of one year of experience as an Emergency Medicine Scribe at Decatur Morgan Hospital is preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to function in a fast-paced environment and change tasks frequently and quickly are required.
  • Computer and typing skills, including demonstrated knowledge of grammar, spelling, and punctuation, are required.
Responsibilities
  • Accompany the emergency medicine provider to the treatment space for patient evaluation.
  • Record the patient's chief complaint, history of present illness, review of symptoms, past medical history, social history, family medical history, disease risk factors, and other relevant patient information.
  • Record physical examination details, including pertinent positives and negatives, abnormalities, and general patient condition, as relayed by the provider during the examination.
  • Use medical terminology and approved abbreviations in medical record documentation.
  • Capture all parts of patient care, including critical care, end-of-life discussions, and smoking cessation counseling.
  • Review previous visit records, including records for patients returning within 30 days of inpatient discharge or within 72 hours of emergency room discharge.
  • Place calls to primary care providers, consultants, transfer centers, or other departments on behalf of the provider using the hospital operator.
  • Answer and route incoming calls to provider lines in the emergency department.
  • Follow up on diagnostic tests, procedures, and imaging and alert the provider for review.
  • Transcribe reviewed test, procedure, and imaging results into the note.
  • Document patient disposition, including discharge instructions, admissions, and prescription orders.
  • Monitor the patient tracker board and notify the provider of new arrivals.
  • Ensure that the provider reviews documentation before the end of the shift and make necessary edits.
  • Assist with incomplete charts by reviewing delinquencies with the provider.
  • Participate in departmental and hospital process-improvement initiatives, including annual hospital goals.
  • Complete annual human resources and departmental requirements within the specified timeframe.
  • Practice infection-control procedures, including current isolation precautions.
  • Use two patient identifiers when discussing or documenting patient information.
  • Interact cordially and respectfully with coworkers, patients, and patients' families.
