Requirements
- A healthcare-related degree is preferred, although clinical experience may substitute for education.
- Preferred clinical experience includes nursing, paramedicine, emergency medical technician work, respiratory therapy, medical technician work, or related medical experience.
- Experience with nursing, paramedic medicine, medical technician work, or related medical work is preferred; requestor experience is a plus.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, is required.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook is required.
- Ability to fulfill on-call obligations and work cases for up to 24 consecutive hours is required.
- Employees must remain in compliance with the organization's Motor Vehicle Driving Policy.
Responsibilities
- Manage and evaluate potential organ donor referrals.
- Initiate, guide, and monitor the medical management of organ donors under the guidance of the Administrator On-Call and Medical Director.
- Identify potential donor clinical triggers to encourage timely referrals from hospitals.
- Complete referral evaluations to determine organ and tissue donor suitability according to applicable organizational and regulatory guidelines.
- Review hospital medical records, including medical history, malignancies, and surgical interventions or treatments.
- Apply legal and hospital requirements for death declaration and organ donation.
- Identify the patient's legal next of kin according to state and Uniform Anatomical Gift Act statutes.
- Assess family dynamics, hospital support availability, and family cultural, religious, emotional, and informational needs.
- Guide referring agencies in obtaining informed consent for organ and tissue donation through a designated requestor.
- Identify organ- and tissue-specific and behavioral risk factors according to organizational and regulatory guidelines.
- Provide hospital-based education in collaboration with hospital development staff.
- Collaborate with the Coroner and Medical Examiner's office to satisfy jurisdictional medical and legal requirements for death and organ recovery.
- Monitor and physiologically manage donors affected by brain death to achieve optimal organ function within established protocols.
- Monitor bedside and laboratory parameters, initiate donor management directives, maintain optimal ventilation, and seek medical counsel as appropriate.
- Collaborate with hospital staff to evaluate and physiologically manage donors to achieve optimal organ function.
- Comply with procedures for collecting and labeling blood, culture, and typing specimens.
- Review and document required donor-record information, including laboratory results, diagnostics, and procedural records.
- Assist with departmental inventory management and operate systems to track case supplies.
- Comply with policies regarding donor-record documentation, maintenance, and confidentiality.
- Use hospital profiles and engage with donor families and hospital staff to use resources appropriately.
- Fulfill additional individual and departmental directives and responsibilities as assigned.
- Participate in hospital and professional education to support the organization's mission.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with electronic medical records such as Cerner, Epic, or Meditech is preferred.
- Requestor experience is a plus.
