Requirements
  • Minimum 5 years of experience managing Controls Engineers in an industrial manufacturing environment, with a track record of building and developing high-performing teams
  • Hands-on technical experience with Beckhoff PLCs and TwinCAT v3; comfortable writing code and assessing the code of others
  • Demonstrated experience establishing connectivity between PLC/SCADA systems and MES platforms for production traceability and real-time data acquisition
  • Direct experience participating in equipment design reviews and Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs), including international travel to vendor facilities

Responsibilities
  • Lead the controls and automation function for Peak Energy's Sacramento manufacturing facility, maintaining system uptime across a 24/7, 4-shift production schedule
  • Participate in design reviews for the acquisition of industrial manufacturing equipment, providing critical input on automation architecture, PLC platform compatibility, and control system specifications
  • Lead and participate in international Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) and Site Acceptance Tests (SATs) for newly acquired industrial manufacturing equipment, ensuring systems meet Peak Energy's requirements before shipment and installation
  • Build, hire, and develop a team of Controls Engineers and Controls Technicians (7–12 team members) sized and structured to support continuous 4-shift, 24/7 operations
  • Define and own shift coverage models, escalation protocols, and response procedures; create all documentation governing how the controls team responds to automation issues at any hour
  • Establish and maintain PLC architecture standards across the facility, with Beckhoff TwinCAT as the primary platform
  • Design and implement connectivity between PLCs and MES systems to enable real-time production data, traceability, and process monitoring. Evaluate the existing architecture implemented at Peak’s Burlingame manufacturing facility and incorporate applicable elements where appropriate.
  • Create, maintain, and continuously improve all automation documentation: control system designs, change management procedures, operator manuals, and maintenance protocols
  • Collaborate with equipment engineers, process engineers, and manufacturing leadership to ensure automation systems align with production goals and support ramp objectives
  • Own controls and automation KPIs: system uptime, mean time to repair (MTTR), alarm rationalization, and preventive maintenance compliance
  • Establish and enforce safety standards for control systems, including emergency shutdown procedures, safety interlocks, and compliance with applicable regulatory requirements
  • Identify and drive continuous improvement opportunities in automation that reduce manual intervention, improve yield, and increase throughput

  • Familiarity with Ignition by Inductive Automation for SCADA and data acquisition

Published on July 11, 2026 Sacramento, California - A building in Metro Air Park is about to turn abundant domestic materials into batteries designed to support the nation's electric grid. It is also expected to turn a nearly two-year recruitment campaign into 249 jobs and as much as $71 million in private investment for Sacramento County. County officials welcomed Peak Energy to the industrial development area as the company marked the opening of its first commercial manufacturing facility with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The arrival adds a major clean technology operation to Metro Air Park and gives the region another foothold in the growing advanced manufacturing sector. Peak Energy's new 180,000-square-foot facility is located at 7180 Badiee Drive. The company plans to manufacture sodium-ion battery systems there for utility-scale energy storage, renewable energy projects and other electric grid applications. Unlike conventional lithium-ion batteries, Peak Energy's systems use abundant domestic materials rather than critical minerals such as lithium, nickel and cobalt. The company's technology is intended to provide an alternative for large-scale energy storage while supporting a more domestically based energy supply chain. The facility did not land in Sacramento County through a quick transaction. Its opening follows almost two years of recruitment work led by the Sacramento County Office of Economic Development. As Peak Energy adjusted and refined its plans, the office helped the company study alternative locations and reconnect with important partners so the project could continue moving forward. Peak Energy expects to create 249 jobs during the next five years, providing new manufacturing opportunities as the county works to expand employment in industries with long-term growth potential. The company's investment could reach $71 million, bringing new equipment, operations and economic activity to a site positioned for large industrial users. It could also create opportunities for local suppliers and workers as production grows. Metro Air Park offers more than 1,600 acres of entitled industrial land intended for large-scale development. Its available space has made it a key part of Sacramento County's effort to compete for companies that need large facilities, transportation access and room for future expansion. U.S.-based energy storage developer Peak Energy announced a multi-year, phased agreement with Jupiter Power LLC, a major operator of utility-scale battery energy storage systems, to supply up to 4.75 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of sodium-ion battery technology. The supply agreement, scheduled for deployment between 2027 and 2030, underscores increasing confidence in the commercial viability of sodium-ion as an alternative to lithium-ion for large-scale grid applications. The deal's first phase involves the delivery of approximately 720 megawatt-hours (MWh) of storage capacity in 2027.
