Requirements
- A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required.
- Successful completion of an accredited program for Licensed Practical Nursing is required.
- A Licensed Practical Nurse license in good standing with the State of Michigan is required.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification are required or must be achieved by the end of the core orientation period.
- A basic fetal monitoring course is required or must be achieved by the end of the core orientation period.
- The employee must demonstrate the clinical competencies required to perform Licensed Practical Nurse functions within an approximately three-month general orientation period.
- The employee must be able to move and respond quickly to emergency situations, input and retrieve data from computerized systems, and rotate within the service line and related service areas.
- The employee must be able to communicate effectively with patients, visitors, and all members of the care delivery team.
- The employee must be able to work with sustained computer or close-tolerance visual and hand-eye coordination demands, considerable standing or walking, and regular lifting of up to 50 pounds, including assisting with lifting and moving patients.
Responsibilities
- Admit patients to the obstetrical department and complete preparation tasks.
- Coordinate with the charge nurse or Registered Nurse when patient needs exceed the Licensed Practical Nurse scope of practice, census or acuity is high, or assistance is otherwise needed.
- Document collected data, care provided, and interventions performed by the healthcare team, and communicate patient status to the physician and Registered Nurse.
- Maintain patient flow through the obstetrical area.
- Implement skilled technical care within the limits of the Licensed Practical Nurse license and applicable unit-specific and generic guidelines.
- Implement protocols according to physician orders or in consultation with the Registered Nurse or charge nurse.
- Monitor the Central Fetal Monitoring System, recognize alarms or abnormal fetal heart-rate tracings, and notify the Registered Nurse.
- Respond to call lights and monitor alarms and provide assistance to patients and families.
- Collect and record patient data, including food and fluid intake and output, weight, vital signs, caloric counts, and demographic information.
- Manage intravenous fluids and medication administration; administer specified medications orally or by subcutaneous or intramuscular injection and document the time and amount in patient charts.
- Observe patients and report adverse reactions to medication or treatment to the responsible medical personnel.
- Provide wound dressing, enemas, douches, alcohol rubs, massages, compresses, ice bags, and hot-water bottles; bathe, dress, and assist patients with walking and turning.
- Collect urine, blood, sputum, and other patient specimens for testing.
- Prepare or examine food trays for prescribed diets and feed patients.
- Wash and dress deceased persons.
- Assist with delivery, care, and feeding of infants.
- Assemble and use equipment such as catheters and oxygen supplies.
- Sterilize equipment and supplies and maintain a clean, orderly environment.
- Inventory, requisition, order, restock, and rotate supplies, instruments, equipment, patient rooms, supply rooms, procedure carts, medication rooms, and utility rooms.
- Perform scrub-nurse and surgical-assist duties for assigned obstetrical cases, including reviewing procedures, preparing instruments and equipment, assembling surgical trays, setting up the sterile table, counting instruments and other surgical items, and assisting with gowning, gloving, instruments, sutures, and equipment.
- Prepare operating rooms and labor, delivery, recovery, and postpartum rooms for deliveries and procedures.
- Assist physicians, certified nurse-midwives, nurse practitioners, and nursing personnel before, during, and after deliveries.
- Tear down operating rooms and labor, delivery, recovery, and postpartum rooms after procedures and deliveries; clean equipment and return instruments and supplies to the appropriate locations.
- Pick up and deliver specimens, equipment, meal trays, blood products, and stat pharmacy orders.
- Use and care for computers and Central Fetal Monitoring Systems in the obstetrical area.
- Sort and file reports and answer telephones, take messages, and relay information as a unit communication source.
- Provide patient teaching materials based on identified needs and care guidelines in coordination with providers and Registered Nurses, and document the education.
- Complete the discharge process and assist patients with appointments for further care and rechecks; complete entries in the electronic patient record system.
- Participate effectively as a member of the healthcare team.
- Develop and work toward yearly professional goals and objectives and meet organizational obligations professionally.
- Precept new employees and other students in the unit.
- Communicate patient status, completed interventions, collected data, and pertinent information to the Registered Nurse to facilitate care planning.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
