What believers are saying

  • First-half 2026 bookings hit $35.5 million, up 1,120%, with $40.7 million backlog.
  • AT&T's July 2026 expansion and Florida Atlantic University's $20 million order deepen contracted demand.
  • Management still expects two system deliveries in 2026, with revenue recognized into 2027.

What critics are saying

  • Second-quarter 2026 revenue was $3.07 million, missing estimates and staying tiny.
  • CFO John Markovich retires September 2, 2026, adding execution risk during scaling.
  • If 2032 gate-model milestones slip, D-Wave remains a hype-driven annealing niche.

What makes D-Wave Quantum unique

  • Only dual-platform quantum vendor: annealing systems now, gate-model roadmap through 2032.
  • AT&T expanded D-Wave adoption on network optimization, validating real enterprise workflows.
  • Advantage2 and upcoming Advantage3 target practical optimization before fault-tolerant quantum arrives.

D-Wave Quantum's revenue to triple before 2030 despite $5.9M first-half slump

D-Wave Quantum's revenue could triple before 2030, despite a 67% year-over-year decline to $5.9 million in the first half of 2026. The quantum computing company's growth potential rests on contracted customer spending rather than recent performance. D-Wave's 2025 revenue reached $24.6 million, up 179% from 2024's $8.8 million. However, that jump relied heavily on a single $12.6 million annealing quantum computing system sale in the first quarter of 2025. When 2026 lapped that deal, first-quarter revenue plunged 81%. The company's bookings totalled $35.5 million in the first half of 2026, up from $2.9 million a year earlier. This included a $20 million system purchase by Florida Atlantic University and a $10 million two-year cloud-access agreement with a Fortune 100 company. D-Wave's remaining performance obligations stood at $40.7 million as of 30 June, with 57% expected to convert to revenue within 12 months.

Quantum computing stocks poised to fall hardest if September triggers AI sell-off

IonQ reported second-quarter revenue of $80.1 million, up 287% year-over-year, and raised its full-year guidance to $280 million-$290 million from $260 million-$270 million. The company's remaining performance obligations grew 297% to $485 million. Quantum computing stocks have declined more sharply than the broader tech sector during sell-offs in 2025, falling harder than the Nasdaq-100 on 17 of 23 trading days when tech dropped at least 1.5%. The sector faces valuation concerns, with IonQ trading at significantly higher multiples than comparable unprofitable software companies like C3.ai and BigBear.ai, which trade at 6.9 times and 10.1 times forward sales respectively. September historically sees average market declines of 1.16%, though upcoming events including the jobs report and Federal Reserve meeting could increase volatility.

BMO initiates D-Wave Quantum with $35 target, sees 85% upside on commercial quantum progress

D-Wave Quantum stock rose 2% on Friday after BMO Capital initiated coverage with an Outperform rating and $35 price target, suggesting roughly 85% upside. Analyst Harsh Kumar highlighted D-Wave's commercial revenue generation and dual capability across annealing and gate-model quantum systems as competitive advantages. The company reported $35.5 million in bookings during the first half of 2026, up more than 1,120% year-over-year, whilst remaining performance obligations climbed 668% to $40.7 million. However, second-quarter revenue of approximately $3.1 million missed expectations. The company posted a $0.13-per-share loss, wider than the projected $0.09 loss. Despite the bullish analyst coverage, D-Wave requires stronger revenue growth to support its valuation.

Microsoft edges D-Wave as safer quantum bet despite pure-play appeal

D-Wave Quantum and Microsoft both offer exposure to quantum computing, but Microsoft emerges as the stronger investment choice given current market conditions. D-Wave recently saw bookings surge 1,120% to $35.5 million in the second quarter. AT&T expanded its use of D-Wave's quantum annealing technology for network optimisation tasks. However, actual quarterly revenue was only $3 million, and the company remains unprofitable. D-Wave trades at a price-to-sales ratio of 610, far exceeding the technology sector average of 8. This hefty valuation poses significant risk for a company with lumpy revenue and years away from profitability. Microsoft offers quantum computing exposure with substantially less risk. The tech giant's financial strength and diversified business model make it better positioned to weather quantum computing's uncertain development timeline whilst providing stable returns.

US urges allies to choose between American and Chinese tech ecosystems in AI and quantum race

The US-China technology race is intensifying as Washington prepares to urge countries in its AI cooperation network to choose between American and Chinese technology ecosystems. This effort builds on Pax Silica, a US-led initiative securing supply chains for AI, semiconductors, and critical minerals. Against this backdrop, four stocks offer exposure to the emerging US-led advanced-technology ecosystem: NVIDIA and Micron Technology in AI, plus D-Wave Quantum and Rigetti Computing in quantum computing. The International Monetary Fund projects 3% global GDP growth in 2026, with AI-driven demand supporting technology-integrated economies despite broader economic headwinds. The Federal Reserve maintained rates at 3.5%-3.75% on 29 July, citing elevated inflation despite strong productivity and capital investment. NVIDIA remains dominant in AI infrastructure, with first-quarter revenues surging 85% year-over-year. The company guided second-quarter revenues of approximately $91 billion, though the outlook excludes Data Center compute revenues from China.
