Requirements
  • The candidate must be a first- or second-year student in an ARDMS Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs-accredited diagnostic medical sonography program focused on ultrasound, echocardiography, or vascular imaging.
  • The candidate must be in the first or second year of a clinical diagnostic medical sonography program.
  • Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification is required.
  • Computer usage experience is required.
  • The employee must work under direct supervision during imaging and must not perform sonographic examinations independently.
  • The candidate must be able to stand or walk for up to eight hours per shift in 30-minute increments and frequently stoop, crouch, bend, and lift the arms above shoulder level.
  • The candidate must be able to pull, push, and lift patients weighing up to 300 pounds with assistance and lift or move objects weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • The candidate must have hearing sufficient for normal conversation and vision sufficient for normal vision.
  • The candidate must know how to handle, dispose of, and clean up spills involving hazardous materials in the department, including hydrogen peroxide, formalin, and Cidex, and understand the Global Harmonization System signs.
Responsibilities
  • Properly identify patients and the appropriate examination or modality while providing appropriate care.
  • Assume responsibility for the assigned area and ensure necessary equipment and supplies are available.
  • Clean ultrasound rooms, beds, equipment, and surfaces after each patient.
  • Follow hand-washing policies before and after each examination.
  • Follow policies concerning wounds and infections during examinations.
  • Assist sonographers in setting up ultrasound examinations and procedures.
  • Shadow or assist sonographic examinations and procedures under direct supervision.
  • Retrieve and transport patients and supplies, prepare procedure rooms, obtain patient histories, prepare patients for examinations, and clean equipment and transducers.
  • Answer the department telephone, request prior reports and scripts, and arrange inpatient and stat appointments.
  • Assist radiologists, nurses, physicians, and physician assistants with invasive procedures by setting up trays using sterile techniques, gathering supplies and paperwork, assisting during procedures, and cleaning up using Universal Precautions and proper sharps disposal.
  • Transport laboratory samples to the laboratory after procedures.
