Requirements
- With that vision in mind, we are looking for a Staff Loads Engineer to join our Flight Physics team. The goal of the Staff Loads Engineer at Wisk is to develop static and dynamic external loads and assess them with flight test with tools of varying fidelity based on program requirements across the different aircraft development phases. Additionally, you will effectively collaborate with other disciplines such as Dynamics, Structures, Aerodynamics, GNC, and Flight Test to build the first fully autonomous all-electric aircraft that performs and operates safely in an urban air-mobility environment
- Your goal is to make sure that the aircraft external loads assessments performed at Wisk are conducted with the highest standards of safety while adhering to the program agreed timelines. Your mission is to support the Loads & Dynamics team in the successful design, analysis, testing and certification of the current and future Wisk eVTOL platforms
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or another relevant discipline
- 8+ years of experience performing detailed loads analysis for fixed-wing aircraft and/or rotorcraft
- Ability to question traditional assumptions and apply your knowledge to novel eVTOL designs and operational scenarios
- Knowledge of Aircraft Certification Processes and Standards (FAA Part 23, 25, 27 or 29)
- Excellent understanding of aircraft structures, external loads and aeroelasticity
- Experience correlating and validating loads models using experimental data, including Flight Test Loads Survey and Ground Vibration Test
- Experience with NASTRAN, RCAS, FLIGHTLAB or other loads & aeroelastic analysis tools
- Experience with analysis & scripting tools such as MATLAB or Python
- You are a highly motivated, self starting individual with a broad set of skills and never afraid of facing complex technical challenges
- You are a solution oriented individual with a strong analytical mindset
- You have strong communication skills and can easily tailor your communications to suit the audience
- You can adapt quickly or propose changes needed to achieve early results in a timely fashion
- You embrace challenges and take commitments and deliver results within reasonable expectations
- You are a positive team player
Responsibilities
- As part of the Flight Physics organization, and deployed in the Loads & Dynamics team you will act as a Staff Loads Engineer for a novel type of aircraft development targeting the autonomous UAM market
- You will take part in computing aircraft static and dynamic external design loads
- You will support the Loads & Dynamics team in the successful design, analysis, testing and certification of the current and future Wisk eVTOL platforms
- You will help support problem solving activities such as aircraft structural sizing and design for fatigue
- In some areas, you will be working closely with Dynamics, Aerodynamics, GNC, Structures and Flight Test to define aircraft requirements and aircraft external loads
- You will plan and execute aircraft certification testing such as GVT and loads validation testing
- As a Staff Loads Engineer, you will help defining loads & dynamics tools/processes to better support aircraft design and certification
Desired Qualifications
- The successful candidate is expected to have experience performing analysis and simulations to compute aircraft static and dynamic design loads and a background in rotor dynamics analysis. Experience performing ground vibration tests and loads validation tests is also desirable. Experience with the FAA Part 23 aircraft certification process is a plus. In this role, the candidate must be proactive, hands-on, forward thinking and self-motivated with the ability to inspire and thrive in a collaborative and fast-paced start-up environment
- M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or another relevant discipline
- 5+ years of aerodynamics experience working on complex aerospace systems
- Previous FAA Part 23 and/or Part 27 certification program experience preferred
- Knowledge of propeller and/or helicopter blade loads, aeroelasticity, structural dynamics and rotor dynamics
- Experience with Interactions of Systems of Structures and computing loads for aircraft with fly-by-wire control systems (including envelope protection and loads alleviation functions)
- Understanding of fixed-wing and/or rotorcraft aerodynamics, including familiarity with the use of RANS CFD codes and lower fidelity tools such as Xfoil & AVL
