Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent and less than one year of relevant experience are required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Responsibilities
  • Review system edits and assign appropriate codes from the appropriate coding classification system to ensure quality healthcare data and accurate professional payment.
  • Use coding systems and system logic to review codes created by electronic charge capture and assign appropriate codes through medical record documentation according to the designated workflow.
  • Complete system edit reviews and make corrections before transmittal.
  • Handle the work queue and responsibilities within established guidelines and timeframes.
  • Troubleshoot problems that prevent claims from being released.
  • Identify the cause of edits and independently resolve issues by reviewing patient encounters to understand the nature of the problem.
  • Consult with internal customers and external vendors to obtain greater specificity or clarification when documentation appears inconsistent or incomplete.
  • Prepare reports for designated leaders to document recurring problems and identify the source of reimbursement delays.
  • Work closely with designated leaders to resolve invoice payment delays.
  • Provide providers and other staff with information related to coding as necessary.
  • Respond to coding information requests and inquiries from various sources.
Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge of International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS).
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy.
  • AHIMA accreditation examination credentials for Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS).
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification from the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) or Certified Medical Coder (CMC) certification from Practice Management Institute.
