Requirements
  • Knowledge of basic grammar and mathematical principles normally acquired through a high school education, with some postsecondary education preferred.
  • Additional training or working knowledge of related business.
  • Two years of experience working in hospital service access, clinical service access, a physician office, or billing and collections; or an associate's degree in a healthcare-related field and one year of experience working with the public; or a bachelor's degree and one year of experience working with the public.
  • Working knowledge of compliance principles.
  • Ability to analyze data, perform multiple tasks, and work independently.
  • Ability to develop and maintain professional, service-oriented working relationships with patients, physicians, coworkers, and supervisors.
  • Ability to understand and comply with policies and procedures.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Responsibilities
  • Complete patient accounts according to departmental protocols, policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements, including pre-admission, admission, preregistration, and registration functions.
  • Ensure insurance requirements are met before patients arrive and inform patients of their financial liability before services are provided.
  • Arrange payment options and screen patients for government funding sources.
  • Analyze insurance coverage and benefits to support timely reimbursement.
  • Obtain prior authorization certifications and other required authorizations.
  • Facilitate payment sources for uninsured patients.
  • Research accident-related conditions to determine the appropriate liability or payment source.
  • Admit, register, and preregister patients using accurate demographic and financial data.
  • Resolve insurance claim rejections and denials promptly.
  • Calculate and collect patient cash payments and reconcile the daily cash deposit.
  • Evaluate diagnoses for compliance with the Local Medicare Review Policy.
  • Compile departmental statistics for budgetary and reporting purposes.
  • Explain bills according to Patient Revenue Management Organization credit and collection policies.
  • Implement collection actions and assist financially responsible persons with arranging payment.
  • Refer patients for financial counseling.
  • Determine the need for third-party sponsorship and process patients according to policy and procedure.
  • Examine insurance policies and third-party sponsorship materials to identify payment sources.
  • Inform the attending physician of patient financial hardship.
  • Complete managed care waiver forms for out-of-network patients receiving services at a reduced benefit level.
  • Update the billing system to reflect patient insurance status.
  • Refer patients to the Manufacturer Drug program when needed for medications.
  • Greet and assist visitors and patients.
  • Explain policies and procedures and resolve problems.
  • Gather documentation to support the proper handling of inquiries and complaints.
  • Assist with departmental coverage as requested.
  • Obtain authorizations according to insurance plan contracts and guidelines.
  • Document billing system activity according to policy and procedure.
  • Enter and update referrals as required.
  • Communicate with insurance carriers regarding requested clinical information and coverage or payment issues.
