Responsibilities
  • Provide field-level insights and inputs to shape the program design, including the pre-survey and ongoing monthly Teacher Professional Development session design.
  • Support implementation of the Khan Academy learning platform across government higher secondary schools in Andhra Pradesh with Samagra Shiksha, Andhra Pradesh, and the state nodal officer.
  • Take ownership of work streams and deliver the pre-agreed goals.
  • Deliver and support training for education officials, Khan Academy program mentors, administrative cadre, and teachers.
  • Follow up on training implementation and identify insights and challenges to strengthen the program for teachers.
  • Oversee end-to-end project management and provide strategic direction, mentorship, and oversight to Subject-Specific Training Leads.
  • Build and maintain relationships with nodal officers, state resource persons, district-level officers, teacher mentors, and school stakeholders.
  • Conduct monthly school visits, monitor and assist program teams, and use platform usage and training feedback to make data-driven decisions.

Google.org fellows and Gemini bring real-time interactive diagrams to Khanmigo for back-to-school 2026. The nonprofit Khan Academy is introducing new AI-powered learning tools in classrooms, just in time for back-to-school season, with help from Google. Built with Gemini models, these updates bring new capabilities to Khanmigo, Khan Academy's AI-powered student tutor and teaching assistant, including interactive diagrams that guide students through math and science concepts in the moment, and a reimagined practice tool that keeps teachers in control of their assignments. Six engineers, six months. Since March, a team of six Google engineers worked alongside Khan Academy's product and engineering organization through a six-month Google.org fellowship. Khan Academy has moved those features from early pilots to real classrooms in time for back-to-school 2026. The partnership also included a Google.org grant and gave Khan Academy's experts direct access to Gemini models in time for the 2026 school year. Sal Khan, founder and CEO of Khan Academy, credited the arrangement for accelerating delivery. "Google is a tremendous partner," he said. "The Google.org Fellows have supercharged our engineering effort, allowing us to produce several new AI-powered features in time for students and teachers to use these tools in the new school year." What students now see. Khanmigo now has new ways to help students learn. Where it previously offered text, Khanmigo now uses Gemini's advanced reasoning capabilities to generate interactive visual aids and diagrams. If Khanmigo detects that a visual could help a student with a math or science problem, it will create charts, geometric shapes, parallel coordinate plots, and more. And if a student drags a vertex or a line segment, Khanmigo recognizes the change and adjusts the lesson accordingly. The shift matters because Khanmigo had previously been limited to text-only responses. Students can now interact with these diagrams, and Khanmigo will respond to what students are doing. Adding manipulable geometry and data graphics closes a long-standing gap between what the AI tutor could explain in words and what a student could actually see and interact with. A new tool for teachers. In the past, teachers could use Khanmigo to generate practice questions, but they did not have a way to curate what was sent to students. Google engineers have now helped integrate Gemini models directly into Khan Academy's Practice My Knowledge teacher tool, which enables teachers to generate high-quality, targeted multiple-choice questions in seconds. Teachers remain in control: they can review, refine, and curate AI-generated questions before assigning them to students. Teachers can also assign scored or unscored practice and receive structured reporting, making it easier to understand where students are doing well and where they may need more support. The two new features sit inside Khanmigo, Khan Academy's AI-powered student tutor and teaching assistant, which Khan Academy and Google.org have developed with support from a Google.org Fellowship and Google's Gemini models, in time for back-to-school 2026. Google has also recently introduced new teacher-led tools in Google Classroom so teachers can tailor their students' AI experience to their specific curriculum and track progress in real time, and its connected Classroom app in Gemini lets educators draft lesson plans. A partnership scaling into literacy. The back-to-school launch builds on an announcement made at this year's British Educational Training and Technology (Bett) conference. Khan Academy is integrating Gemini's most capable models into a suite of tools focused on literacy and reading, starting with its Writing Coach tool, which actively guides students through the process of outlining, drafting, and refining their own ideas rather than simply generating answers. Writing Coach supports grades 7, 12 writing instruction, with broader availability for grades 7, 12 and U.S. beta access for grades 5, 6. Later this year, Khan Academy will launch a Reading Coach powered by Gemini for grades 5, 12. Reading Coach will offer interactive learning experiences with a variety of texts designed for grades 5, 12. Google's approach with Khan Academy pairs a hyperscaler's compute with a trusted nonprofit brand, a model that Google has also extended to college students through a one-year free offer of Google AI Pro for eligible college students in the U.S. For educators already inside the Khan Academy ecosystem, the Khanmigo features are available now. District administrators can explore the tools through Khan Academy's platform. The Reading Coach and additional Gemini integrations are expected to reach classrooms later this year. Khan Academy teams up with iteach on AI teacher training. Khan Academy is bringing its AI-powered teaching assistant, Khanmigo, to thousands of educators through a new partnership with iteach, a teacher certification program that operates outside traditional university pathways. The collaboration will embed AI training directly into the certification process, ensuring preservice teachers develop proficiency with the technology before they begin leading classrooms. The tool will be available to all preservice teachers enrolled in iteach's program, helping them integrate AI into lesson planning, curriculum development, and professional growth. Khanmigo remains in beta but has gained support from Microsoft, which provides cloud infrastructure through Azure OpenAI Service. iteach currently works across 1,550 districts and Local Education Agencies in the US and is the only non-university alternative teacher certification program that has earned accreditation from the CAEP. AI training for new teachers. Andrew Rozell, president of iteach, said the partnership will prepare new teachers to use AI ethically and reduce their workload. "Through iteach's partnership with Khan Academy, new teachers will enter the classroom with confidence, ready to educate students on the ethical use of AI and take advantage of this powerful technology to ease their own workloads, which we all know is often overwhelming." Khanmigo includes a feature called "refresh my knowledge," allowing certified teachers to revisit key concepts in subjects they teach. Kristen DiCerbo, Khan Academy's chief learning officer, said the partnership will give aspiring teachers "their own personal teaching assistant." "Through this partnership, Khanmigo will equip aspiring iteach educators with their own personal teaching assistant. When they enter the classroom as credentialed teachers, they'll be able to put AI to use to streamline prep and focus on spending quality time with students." Growing demand for AI in schools. AI adoption in classrooms is already rising, with around one-third of K-12 teachers saying that they have used the technology. Khan Academy expects Khanmigo to ease the workload of teachers and help them teach students what AI is and how to safely use it. A National 4-H Council survey found that 72% of students want more guidance on AI-powered tools. All preservice teachers with iteach will have access to Khanmigo throughout their certification process. While AI in education is still evolving, tools like Khanmigo could shift how teachers plan lessons and engage with students.

Khanmigo's first chapter changed how I think about AI: A note from Sal Khan. July 15, 2026 By Sal Khan, Founder and CEO of Khan Academy Setting the record straight. I started Khan Academy as a nonprofit because I believed that access to a great education should not depend on where you live, how much money your family has, or whether you happen to find the right tutor at the right moment. So when I talk candidly about what Khan Academy is learning from AI, it is not because I am trying to lower expectations or walk away from the work. It is the opposite. If Khan Academy is serious about helping students learn, especially students who are not already well-served, then Khan Academy has to be honest about what is working, what is not working yet, and what needs to get better. Some people heard my recent comments about Khanmigo and interpreted them as "AI tutoring failed." That is not what I said, and it is not what I believe. What I said was that the first version of Khanmigo that Khan Academy launched three years ago did not change student learning as much as many of Khan Academy hoped it would. That matters. But it is also exactly the kind of thing you learn when you bring a new tool into real classrooms with real students and teachers. I want to set the record straight and clarify three things: 1. Khan Academy works. Decades of independent data prove its platform drives substantial learning gains. My comment was a candid observation about what Khan Academy learned when a brand-new medium was layered on to the existing, effective platform three years ago. 2. Khan Academy pride ourselves on being transparent and honest. The edtech landscape is currently flooded with flashy, unproven AI tools that make grand promises while offering little more than wrappers around major large language models with limited safety guardrails. Khanmigo was, and remains, a pedagogically sound AI tutor with guardrails that was built for students in classrooms. Most importantly, it is anchored on Khan Academy's demonstrably effective, human-crafted instructional and practice content. 3. The comment was in reference to the first version of its AI integration, and Khan Academy used that honest reflection to build something better. Khan Academy didn't give up; Khan Academy iterated. Khan Academy has used those early classroom insights to build a far more effective, next-generation learning experience within its proven learning platform. Why integration matters. The combination of Khan Academy's world-class, human-crafted, instructional materials and Khanmigo's ability to drive deeper engagement fixes the fundamental flaws of both traditional edtech and AI-only tools. 1. It replaces "cognitive offloading" with "cognitive onloading." Because Khanmigo is built directly into Khan Academy's practice problems, it can see the problem a student is working on and discuss it with them. Instead of handing over the answer, Khanmigo shows them where they might make mistakes and provides support for arriving at the correct answer. Using data to decide which changes to Khanmigo actually engage students more in learning, Khan Academy is working on new ways to help students engage in this conversation. 2. Khan Academy chose integration over isolation. In its next-generation tools, Khanmigo is no longer an add-on that requires students to recognize when they need help and understand how to ask for it. Khanmigo now prompts a student to explain how they arrived at an answer and explain their thinking. Students retain agency over whether they engage or not, but Khan Academy has reduced the metacognitive load required for them to do so. This is not AI for AI's sake. It is leveraging AI to increase students' learning and reflection. 3. It multiplies teacher capacity. A teacher with 30 students cannot sit next to every child to catch a mistake the moment it happens. Khan Academy has always provided teachers with a data-driven map of who has mastered a concept and who is stuck. Now, Khanmigo acts as the on-the-ground coach. It handles the immediate, granular feedback, which frees up the teacher to do the deeply human work of motivating a discouraged student or running a small-group intervention. What Khan Academy is seeing in schools. Khan Academy is not incorporating AI for AI's sake. Khan Academy is using it to provide scaffolding and feedback during independent practice. Let's be absolutely clear about what its data actually showed. For students who engaged, Khanmigo did what Khan Academy designed it to do. It probed reasoning, supported students as they worked through a concept, pushed back on logical fallacies, and behaved like a human tutor. But Khan Academy also learned something: if Khanmigo was going to help students think harder, it had to become more central to the practice experience. The AI could not just sit next to the content. It had to be woven into it. Khan Academy had to make productive struggle harder to sidestep. Unlike many AI tools that are still making broad promises, Khan Academy's work is grounded in evidence. In New Jersey, students in Newark Public Schools using Khan Academy saw math gains on their state assessments. That matters because Newark is not a boutique experiment. It is a real district serving real students. And it shows what is possible when trusted content, teacher insight, and thoughtful AI work together. Expectations and reality. When I first saw the early versions of GPT models in August of 2022, I was amazed by what they could already do and was excited by the potential. Some of that potential has been realized. The models are far better at math now than they were at the time. However, other aspects of that potential have not been realized. AI is not good at generating standards-aligned content on the fly, for example. Khan Academy has learned that it is far better when paired with its expert human-created content. In May 2024, I made a video with my son that showed a demo of a tutor that could see what Khan Academy were drawing and converse back and forth. Khan Academy is only now starting to see some of the model capabilities that would allow Khanmigo to interact with visuals outside of a demo environment. Some things I envisioned will happen more slowly. Some may not work out. And some will go on to help improve learner outcomes. Khan Academy will keep being transparent with you about what works, what doesn't, and what Khan Academy is learning along the way. The path forward: scaffolds, not shortcuts. The current debate in education is gridlocked in a false dichotomy: sweeping bans on technology versus a tech-utopian free-for-all. Both sides are wrong. The answer isn't to take away the laptops; the answer is to give students tools that actually support student learning. Families with time and resources will always find ways to provide elite tutoring for their children at home. If Khan Academy respond to the challenges of AI by banning it in schools, Khan Academy is putting up a velvet rope disguised as caution tape, denying under-resourced students the very tools that can level the playing field. The combination of Khan Academy and Khanmigo is a strong solution because it strikes the right balance. It provides the strict guardrails, safety protocols, and teacher oversight that schools require while also delivering the personalized, rigorous intellectual push that students need.
