Requirements
  • A sound knowledge and background in geriatric, rehabilitation or long-term care nursing including activation, nursing, and personnel administration.
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
  • Knowledge of the Fixing Long-Term Care Act and Regulations, the appropriate sections of the Health Disciplines Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Pharmacy Act, Food and Drugs Act (Canada), Controlled Substances Act (Canada), Health Promotion and Protection Act, Personal Health Protection Act, Coroners Act, Provincial College of Nurses and Standards of Practice, and other pertinent federal, provincial and municipal statutes that influence the operation of the nursing home and nursing department.
  • Registration and membership in good standing with the provincial registry.
Responsibilities
  • In collaboration with the Director of Care and Assistant Director of Care, implement AgeCare policies and procedures in the neighbourhood and provide input into procedure revisions within the home.
  • Liaise with physicians and other members of the health care team, including external health care partners, and immediately notify the physician of significant changes in resident status.
  • Coordinate nursing and other services for residents within the neighbourhood and with other services within the residence.
  • Provide supervision and direction to Registered Practical Nurses and Personal Support Workers.
  • Lead shift reports with members of the health care team and ensure that team members are informed of changes in residents' status.
  • Record significant changes in residents' condition and ensure that resident-chart documentation adheres to AgeCare policies and procedures and Provincial College of Nurses and Standards of Practice.
  • Review and process physician orders according to procedure, ensure orders are implemented promptly, and communicate processing difficulties to the Director of Care or Assistant Director of Care.
  • Provide first aid to staff members when necessary, initiate Employee Incident Reports, and ensure their completion.
  • Ensure all medications required by residents are received on the neighbourhood and administer medications and treatments according to residence procedures.
