Requirements
  • A Certified Engineer-In-Training credential in Texas, or eligibility for licensure and the ability to obtain Texas Engineer-In-Training certification within six months of employment, is required for the Mechanical Graduate Engineer role.
  • A Bachelor's degree from an ABET-accredited program in Mechanical Engineering or a related field is required for the Mechanical Graduate Engineer role.
  • A Texas Professional Engineer license, or an out-of-state license with the ability to obtain Texas reciprocity within six months, is required for the Mechanical Engineer role.
  • The Mechanical Engineer role requires a minimum of four years of experience in industrial, steam, chilled water, or utility systems.
  • Experience with project management and budget development is required for the Mechanical Engineer role.
  • Knowledge of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and energy systems is required.
  • Candidates must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships and work independently and as part of a team.
  • Candidates must be able to identify and solve problems, think critically, and create solutions.
  • Candidates must be able to adapt to change and learn new technologies and processes quickly.
  • Candidates must demonstrate written and oral communication skills, including presentations to nontechnical audiences.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint is required.
  • A Class C operator's driver's license and a current three-year driving record are required.
  • Candidates must maintain an acceptable driver rating and complete required background checks.
  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without sponsorship.
Responsibilities
  • Evaluate, troubleshoot, and review the operation of utility systems, including combustion gas turbines, steam turbine generators, chillers, boilers, cooling towers, and distribution systems.
  • Analyze controls, automation, and metered data to identify improvement opportunities, recommend corrective actions, and optimize system performance.
  • Manage and coordinate utility system projects by developing schedules, cost estimates, budgets, construction plans, specifications, contracts, and agreements.
  • Oversee projects from preliminary feasibility and long-range planning through design, construction, and commissioning.
  • Prepare investigation, feasibility study, progress, and final reports.
  • Determine initial and long-term project costs and savings and prepare life-cycle analyses.
  • Report findings through written reports and presentations using Tableau and Power BI.
  • Advise on industry standards and code requirements and create, update, and maintain design and construction specifications and standard details.
  • Review engineering scopes of work, assist with engineering firm selection, and review deliverables from outsourced engineers.
  • Perform technical design reviews as a mechanical engineering subject matter expert.
  • Review construction submittals, respond to requests for information, and review proposed contract changes for compliance with design standards.
  • Coordinate communication among department and campus stakeholders, government agencies, contractors, consultants, and the public.
  • Identify and implement solutions that improve system efficiency, reliability, and sustainability.
  • Follow University and Utilities and Energy Management policies and procedures, complete required training and continuing education, and report safety hazards, near misses, and incidents.
  • Implement and enforce safety protocols, use required personal protective equipment, and drive University vehicles safely.
  • Work at UT Austin campuses and facilities, including construction sites and power and chilled water plants, and carry a University-issued cell phone during on-call hours.
Desired Qualifications
  • Familiarity with environmental regulations in the energy sector is preferred.
  • Experience developing or reviewing construction standards or codes is preferred.
  • Experience in educational, research, or health care facilities is preferred.
  • Experience with energy and water conservation programs is preferred.
  • Experience using data visualization software such as Tableau or Power BI is preferred.
  • Knowledge and skills in AutoCAD and Revit are preferred.
  • Seven or more years of related experience in industrial, steam, chilled water, or utility systems is preferred for the Mechanical Engineer role.
