Requirements
- Fluency in English and Spanish.
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- One year of employment experience in the child welfare field working with children and/or adolescents in a social service setting, and/or training in a related human services field.
- Pass a pre-employment drug screen and random drug screens throughout employment.
- Provide proof of work eligibility status upon request.
- Pass pre-employment and biennial criminal background checks.
- Respond sensitively and competently to the service population’s cultural and socio-economic characteristics.
- Work collaboratively with other staff members, service providers, and professionals.
- Provide crisis intervention according to training provided by Compass Connections when needed to maintain a safe environment.
- Work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining emotional control and professional composure.
- Maintain the computer literacy required to meet the responsibilities of the position.
- Work effectively without intensive supervision, both independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
- Maintain a working knowledge of all Compass Connections policies and procedures.
- Receive an annual influenza vaccination or obtain an approved medical or religious exemption as a condition of employment.
Responsibilities
- Meet all applicable federal and state regulatory guidelines and standards.
- Document serious incidents, daily progress, and activities completely, accurately, promptly, and in compliance with agency policies and procedures.
- Assist with the orientation of new children and staff.
- Provide input into treatment plans as appropriate or requested.
- Use positive child management techniques, including verbal redirection, de-escalation, and containment.
- Plan, organize, and supervise activities for children according to the daily activity schedule.
- Teach constructive behavior and social skills, realistic problem-solving behaviors, responsible time and money management, conversational English, personal hygiene, and life skills.
- Assist children with homework assignments.
- Maintain an orderly and clean children’s living area, assist with household and children’s laundry, oversee daily chores, identify routine maintenance or repair work, and report it to the Unit Manager.
- Maintain and update records regarding children’s clothing and personal items.
- Maintain a secure campus environment by making required rounds and using proper radio communication protocols, including responding to all radio calls.
- Promote positive interaction between children and encourage them to take responsibility in the facility’s daily routine.
- Model culturally and socially desired behaviors and explain them to children to facilitate learning and replication.
- Work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed or requested by the position supervisor.
- Implement Compass Connections safety protocols, including evacuating with children and other staff in an emergency.
- Maintain confidentiality in all areas of child and program operations.
- Maintain Compass Connections’ professional and ethical standards of conduct, including respecting agency staff, children, and community members and complying with the required dress code.
- Provide sustained and uninterrupted direct supervision of assigned children from the beginning of the shift until relieved.
- Follow medical and clinical staff instructions regarding each child and inform the Unit Manager of information affecting the basic health and well-being of assigned children.
- Communicate positively and respectfully with children, families, agency staff, supervisors, co-workers, therapists, student interns, and volunteers.
- Traverse frequently between facility areas, indoors and outdoors, to provide direct supervision of children.
- Communicate behavioral expectations and program regulations to children and enforce compliance.
- Complete all required documentation before the end of the shift.
- Meet all deadlines required by the program supervisor and federal partners.
Desired Qualifications
- A two-year associate degree from an accredited program or institution, or two or more years of college-level coursework in a related human services field.
- Two or more years of related experience and/or training in a related human services field.
Compass Connections is a nonprofit provider of community-based services for children, young people, and families. Programs include foster care, residential care, family preservation, behavioral health, and support for unaccompanied children. Teams work with public agencies and caregivers to provide safe, stable, and individualized services. Compass works in child welfare and human services, responding to safety, trauma, development, family relationships, and regulatory requirements through residential settings, foster networks, community programs, and public-agency partnerships.
