Interlune recreates 15,000 years of lunar solar-wind exposure in four hours. Key points * Interlune implanted helium ions into lunar-regolith simulant for four hours, modeling an estimated 15,000 years of solar-wind exposure. [[1]] * The company says its heating test released the implanted helium at temperatures comparable to those measured in Apollo samples. [[1]] [[2]] * Interlune has announced $18 million in seed funding and a $6.9 million NASA contract for lunar-resource technology. [[3]] [[4]] * Helium-3 occurs in lunar soil at parts-per-billion concentrations, leaving excavation, energy, separation and transportation as unresolved constraints. [[2]] [[5]] Interlune, a Seattle startup founded by former Blue Origin executives and Apollo 17 astronaut Harrison Schmitt, has used an ion accelerator to reproduce an estimated 15,000 years of solar-wind exposure in lunar-soil simulant in four hours. [[1]] [[3]] The experiment addresses a practical testing problem: most lunar simulants reproduce the Moon's mechanical and geological characteristics but do not contain the solar-wind gases that Interlune hopes to extract. [[1]] A faster way to make lunar soil behave like lunar soil. The Moon has no global magnetic field or substantial atmosphere to block the solar wind. Over geological time, charged particles from the Sun have implanted helium and other volatile elements into lunar regolith, the loose layer of dust and fragmented rock at the surface. Meteorite impacts have subsequently mixed some of that material into the near-surface soil. [[1]] [[2]] Helium-3 is present only in trace amounts. A NASA-indexed study of lunar-mining concepts cites Apollo 11 measurements averaging 11.8 parts per billion, with values from 9.22 to 17.9 parts per billion in one analyzed soil sample. It also notes that helium is concentrated near grain surfaces and is preferentially retained by some titanium-rich minerals. [[2]] Those concentrations make terrestrial testing difficult. NASA's Apollo collection contains a limited amount of pristine lunar material, while conventional simulants lack the implanted gases. Interlune's team, led by planetary scientist Elizabeth Frank, instead used a vacuum chamber to accelerate ionized helium into a regolith simulant. [[1]] The company then heated the treated material and measured the gases released through pyrolysis. Ars Technica reported that the helium emerged at temperatures comparable to those observed when Apollo samples were heated. That result supports the simulant's usefulness for one aspect of ground testing; it does not show that the material reproduces every chemical or physical property of lunar soil. [[1]] The test helps with hardware, not economics. Interlune plans to use the treated simulant to evaluate machinery for excavating, heating and processing lunar regolith, and says it may offer the material to other lunar-resource companies. [[1]] The company has also worked with Iowa-based manufacturer Vermeer on a full-scale excavator prototype designed to handle about 100 metric tons of regolith per hour. [[6]] That target illustrates the scale of the resource problem. At parts-per-billion concentrations, a system would have to move and heat enormous quantities of soil to recover a relatively small amount of helium-3. A prior feasibility study estimated that an end-to-end lunar-mining mission could require processing hundreds of tons of regolith per second under optimistic assumptions for returning helium-3 to Earth. [[5]] The relevant engineering questions extend beyond digging. A lunar system would need to sort and heat abrasive soil, separate helium-3 from helium-4 and other gases, supply power through difficult surface conditions, and either use the product in space or transport it to Earth. Interlune has not publicly disclosed a complete energy balance or cost model for a commercial lunar operation. The four-hour experiment does not answer those questions. NASA is funding a technology demonstration. NASA awarded Interlune a firm-fixed-price contract worth $6.9 million in May 2026 for lunar-resource development. NASA said the work will address extraction of resources including hydrogen and helium-3 from regolith and could provide data on solar-wind volatile concentrations and lunar mineralogy. [[4]] The contract is a technology-development award, not a finding that lunar helium-3 extraction is commercially proven. GeekWire reported that the 18-month project is expected to develop and test an extraction system on Earth before a planned lunar mission. The payload is expected to include equipment for scooping, sorting, heating and analyzing lunar material. [[7]] Interlune announced $18 million in seed funding in March 2024 from investors including Seven Seven Six, Aurelia Foundry Fund, Gaingels, Liquid 2 Ventures and Shasta Ventures. [[3]] The company has also disclosed commercial interest in future helium-3 supply. Space.com reported that cryogenic-equipment maker Bluefors signed an agreement to purchase up to 10,000 liters annually, but that agreement concerns prospective supply; Interlune has not yet produced lunar helium-3. [[8]] Fusion is a distant rationale for the resource. Helium-3 is often associated with aneutronic fusion because the deuterium-helium-3 reaction can produce a larger share of its energy in charged particles than the deuterium-tritium reaction. But the Department of Energy says deuterium-helium-3 fusion requires higher ion temperatures than deuterium-tritium fusion, which remains the leading fuel cycle under consideration for fusion power. [[9]] That leaves Interlune's nearer-term commercial case dependent on existing uses for scarce helium-3, including cryogenic cooling, neutron detection and medical research. Those markets are real, but the company still must demonstrate that lunar material can be located, excavated, processed and delivered at a cost customers will accept. [[1]] [[8]] The new experiment narrows one uncertainty: whether accelerated helium implantation can produce a simulant whose release behavior resembles Apollo material. It is evidence for a testing method, not independent validation of a lunar mine.
