Dealerships hit record $9.23M in service revenue but lose market share to 299,000 repair shops

Cox Automotive's 2026 Fixed Operations and Ownership Study reveals that dealerships achieved record service revenue of approximately $9.23 million in 2025, up 33% over eight years, yet their market share fell from 33% to 29% of service visits. The study found a significant gap between buyers' stated intent to return for service (80%) and actual first appointments scheduled (25%). Dealers lose an estimated $12,000 in lifetime service spend per lost customer. Competition has intensified, with nearly 299,000 auto repair businesses now operating in the US, up 12% since 2018. Consumers are keeping vehicles longer—nearly two-thirds now own for five years or more—whilst average service costs jump from 20 cents per mile in the first five years to $1.10 after 10 years. High-performing dealerships demonstrated digital-first experiences and cross-department collaboration, correlating with higher revenue and retention.

US new-vehicle sales pace forecast at 15.8M in March, down 12% from 2025's tariff-driven surge

Cox Automotive forecasts US new-vehicle sales in March at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 15.8 million, essentially flat from February but down nearly 12% year over year. The decline reflects last year's tariff-driven surge, which pushed March 2025 to a four-year high of 17.9 million. March sales volume is expected at 1.37 million units, down 14.2% from March 2025 but up 14.3% from February. First quarter sales are forecast to decline 6.5% year over year, with EV sales down 28% as federal tax credit losses continue to impact demand. Cox Automotive maintains its full-year 2026 forecast of 15.8 million units, down 2.6% from 2025, despite added uncertainty from Middle East conflict and ongoing affordability challenges.
