EchoStar's $8.5B profit masks wireless churn as AT&T adds spectrum

EchoStar reported $8.46 billion in net income for the second quarter, but the figure was driven primarily by a $9.73 billion non-cash deconsolidation gain from business restructuring. The company's core operations continue to struggle, losing 118,000 retail wireless subscribers and 241,000 pay-TV users during the period. Meanwhile, AT&T posted revenues of $31.56 billion and adjusted EPS of $0.65, beating analyst estimates of $0.59. The company generated $4.67 billion in quarterly free cash flow whilst serving over 70 million postpaid phone users. Hedge fund holdings in EchoStar increased from 90 to 102 between Q4 and Q1, though short interest stands at 23.33% of float. AT&T saw hedge fund holders decline from 77 to 72, with minimal short interest at 1.57%.

AT&T may recover $57M fine as Verizon's Supreme Court challenge fails

The US Supreme Court denied Verizon's petition to recover $47 million paid to the Federal Communications Commission for selling customer location data, ending the carrier's legal challenge. AT&T remains in a stronger position to recover its $57 million fine due to different procedural routing through the Fifth Circuit. Between 2014 and 2019, both carriers sold real-time GPS location data for over 140 million subscribers to aggregators, who resold access with minimal oversight. The FCC fined four carriers $196 million total in April 2024. Verizon exhausted its legal options after the Supreme Court ruled 8-1 that carriers weren't denied jury trials because they could have refused payment. AT&T's case was sent back to the Fifth Circuit, where its attorneys argue the company was misled into paying and that the location data wasn't covered by FCC authority.

The company added over 1 million fibre locations, bringing the total to 38.6 million, and targets 40 million by year-end 2026. The telecommunications firm generated 646,000 internet net additions and 432,000 postpaid phone subscribers. AT&T's convergence strategy is gaining traction, with 42.5% of advanced home internet households also having an AT&T postpaid wireless account. The company faces competition from Verizon Communications and T-Mobile US. Verizon's mobility and broadband service revenues increased 2.8% to approximately $23.4 billion, whilst T-Mobile added 277,000 postpaid net accounts with service revenues up 9% year over year.

Jury hears opening statements in AT&T biz Court trial.

Jury hears opening statements in AT&T biz Court trial. In a $50 million dispute between AT&T and a former top sales partner, jurors in the Texas Business Court heard opening statements Tuesday morning that told very different stories, framing the breach of contract case as either a display of "corporate greed" or an unraveling scheme of "bribes and cover-ups." Judge Andrea Bouressa is presiding over the case. Since the Texas Business Court does not have its own space, the weeklong jury trial is taking place in Dallas County District Court Judge Eric Moyé's courtroom in the George Allen Courts Building. AT&T raises $2.3B in floating rate notes to refinance term loans

AT&T has closed a combined debt offering totalling $2.3 billion, selling $1.1 billion of floating rate notes due 2028 and €1.2 billion of floating rate notes due 2028. The US dollar notes were sold at par, whilst the euro notes were sold at 99.850% of par, generating net proceeds of approximately €1.198 billion. Both tranches mature on 17 August 2028 and pay floating rates based on SOFR for the dollar notes and EURIBOR for the euro notes, plus a spread with a zero floor. AT&T intends to use the proceeds to repay part of its $17.5 billion delayed draw term loan credit agreement entered into on 3 November 2025. The transaction represents a refinancing of near-term debt maturities, extending AT&T's debt maturity profile and reducing refinancing risk.
