  • Demonstrated experience with experimental methods and analytical treatments in metallurgical processing research including advanced manufacturing via powder methods, strip casting of magnetic alloys, mechanical and microstructural characterization, magnetic/mechanical/thermal/electrical property characterization
  • Demonstrated experience with magnet manufacturing methods including powder-based and casting routes and heat treatment
  • Experience assembling and leading interdisciplinary teams of researchers including modelers and theorists, experimentalists, microscopists
  • Experience with characterization methods and analytical treatments used in metallurgical and materials science research including electron beam-based microstructural analysis and semi-quantitative chemical techniques, EBSD, XRD, NMR, AES, XPS, etc.
  • Experience with thermodynamic modeling (e.g., CALPHAD), solidification modeling, and/or atomistic modeling for alloy design investigations with specific processing methods and property targets
  • Familiarity with electronic structure modeling and processing kinetics modeling or simulation methods with specific processing methods and property goals
  • Ability to conceive, design and conduct studies of materials sciences including metal and alloy refining and synthesis (e.g., additive manufacturing, gas atomization, plasma melting, electron beam melting, induction melting) manufacturing methods
  • Ability to interpret results, present and defend research at professional meetings, draft manuscripts for publication, guide experimenters, and write research proposals for future funding
  • Maintenance and supervision of daily operation of state-of-the-art experimental facility
  • Ability to interface with diverse teams including administrative staff, processing/design professionals, computational/theoretical modeling experts, physical sciences and engineering professionals
  • Capability to write proposals to government funding calls and build network of industrial/national lab/academic partners
Responsibilities
  • Conceive, design and conduct studies of materials sciences including metal and alloy refining and synthesis manufacturing methods such as additive manufacturing, gas atomization, plasma melting, electron beam melting, induction melting, rolling, forging, extrusion
  • Synthesize and test hard and soft magnetic materials and alloy development for extreme conditions (e.g., fission and fusion energy)
  • Collaborate with supervisor and PIs within the Division of Materials Sciences and Engineering; invent, perform and supervise experiments; interpret results; present and defend research; draft manuscripts with co-authors; guide experimenters; write research proposals for future funding
  • Maintain and supervise daily operation of state-of-the-art experimental facility
  • Interface with diverse team including computational and theoretical modeling experts and technical staff as well as physical sciences and engineering professionals
  • Write proposals to government funding calls and support funded activities; build broader network of industrial, national lab and academic partners; support laboratory strategic goals
