Requirements
- A minimum of two years of experience working as a counselor in a school with students in grades 9–12.
- Exchange and communicate information clearly and accurately with parents, students, and other health professionals.
- Ability to make sound judgments and quick decisions.
- Maintain a high degree of discretion and confidentiality as necessary and appropriate.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate and provide appropriate mental health supports to students with significant social, emotional, and behavioral challenges and their families.
- Assist students with academic learning by providing strategic services that identify issues interfering with the educational process, as identified in an Individualized Education Plan or a 504 Behavior Plan.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary school teams to ensure students’ needs are addressed within the school setting.
- Assist teachers in understanding their students, including providing and interpreting student data, and support school staff in implementing school-wide advisory programs.
- Identify, create, and assess services to address the needs of at-risk students.
- Provide consultation to school staff and parents to facilitate students’ educational, social, and emotional growth.
- Serve as the main point of contact for students’ mental health and social-emotional issues with teachers, administrators, and families.
- Obtain information concerning environmental effects, including family, cultural, and economic disadvantages, that may adversely affect student progress.
- Work with the Restorative Intervention Specialist to provide resources for students experiencing housing insecurity, home relocation, or removal from the home.
- Design, implement, and evaluate processes and procedures for student referrals, placement, and continuous assessments.
- Provide resources and build connections with community providers to make referrals for students and families.
- Work closely with teachers to offer guidance, facilitate communication, and advocate for appropriate support for students and families.
- Provide consultation, support, and resolution on school-based issues through collaboration with parents or guardians, advocates, and legal counsel, and make appropriate referrals.
- Conduct frequent and ongoing individual, group, and workshop sessions addressing students’ social and emotional needs and improving behaviors and interactions that affect school climate, attendance, and learning environments.
- Provide psychoeducation.
- Complete student assessments to determine additional needs.
- Maintain accurate documentation and records.
- Provide related services prescribed by Individualized Education Plans, including social, life, and transitional skills transferable from school to community.
- Participate as a member of Individualized Education Plan, academic 504, Instructional Support, Student Intervention, and other school-based teams to develop interventions promoting students’ academic success.
- Work collaboratively within classroom settings to implement student Individualized Education Plans.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
- A License in Professional Counseling (LPC) is preferred.
- Bilingual English/Spanish communication is preferred.
