Requirements
  • High school graduate or equivalent degree.
  • Current unrestricted Rhode Island Pharmacy Technician II license.
  • Current National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT).
  • At least one year of experience as a pharmacy technician; commensurate experience in a related field such as benefits management may be considered instead.
  • Strong customer service presence and verbal and written communication skills for interacting with patients, providers, nurses, and ancillary support staff.
  • Solid computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite, web applications, and multiple pharmacy system applications.
  • Ability to multitask and reprioritize while maintaining accuracy and service standards.
  • Must obtain within three months of hire and maintain at least annually the pharmacy ambulatory liaison competency requirements demonstrated through the Medication Access Program Competency Checklist, disease state-specific training, accreditation updates, and other operational competencies.
  • Ability to work extended periods sitting and use the visual acuity and manual dexterity needed to operate a computer, keyboard, mouse, and multiple monitors.
Responsibilities
  • Interact effectively and compassionately with patients and families and professionally with providers, nurses, and support personnel.
  • Use established Medication Access Program processes to facilitate affordable, accessible, and reliable pharmacy services for patients.
  • Act as an agent of the provider to authorize prescription refills in accordance with established practices, policies, guidelines, and refill standards.
  • Use the patient electronic health record and multiple pharmacy system applications to obtain, enter, and retrieve information needed to process prescriptions and payment transactions.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act guidelines.
  • Collect patient information for prescription filling, benefits investigation, prior authorization, and financial assistance applications.
  • Enter patient data into organizational systems for accurate service charging, insurance billing, payments, and copay processing.
  • Support growth of the Brown University Health Pharmacy patient population through recruitment of ambulatory care patients.
  • Respond to questions about medication and pharmaceutical supply cost and availability, wait times, drug availability, and refill authorization for expired prescriptions.
  • Develop individual relationships with assigned patients to encourage retention.
  • Proactively contact patients by phone, in person, or another supervisor-approved method to assess medication needs and estimate adherence, including medication supply on hand.
  • Assist patients and customers in resolving identified problems.
  • Identify patients with clinical needs, including medication and drug interaction questions, and refer them to a pharmacist.
  • Participate in quality assessment and improvement activities, identify improvement opportunities, and help develop new processes.
  • Participate in medication safety initiatives and report actual, prevented, and near-miss medication errors using approved processes.
  • Assist with training, onboarding, and supporting fellow staff under pharmacist guidance and Technician Supervisor or Group Leader direction.
  • Conduct benefits investigations, identify coverage details, navigate the electronic health record, answer questions, and provide documentation for prior authorizations and financial assistance applications.
  • Perform prior authorizations, appeals, and tier exceptions on the provider’s behalf, and relay results to patients, families, providers, and pharmacies.
  • Secure treatment-related financial assistance, including manufacturer assistance programs, discount programs, and nationally recognized foundations.
  • Refer patients to manufacturer assistance programs and assist with applications.
  • Coordinate financial assistance applications among patients, clinics, and providers to ensure required paperwork is submitted for qualifying patients.
  • Consult the electronic health record, Medication Access Program, and refill standards before authorizing refill requests.
  • Confirm that the provider has signed the Medication Access Program prescriber opt-in form authorizing the liaison to approve refills.
  • Approve refill requests when the patient has seen the provider within the specified time, laboratory testing is current, and the medication is listed in both the electronic health record and refill standards.
  • Reroute refill requests to the provider, clinical staff, office staff, or pharmacist when defined criteria are not met.
  • Refuse refill requests according to the Medication Access Refill Guidelines.
  • Assist providers in identifying ancillary supplies for select medications, including sharps containers, needles or syringes, alcohol swabs, and bandages.
  • Work independently within department policies and procedures and refer complex policy questions to a supervisor.

  • Completion of one to two years of college.
  • Prior experience with specialty pharmacy services, call center customer service, prior authorization management, and/or patient financial assistance programs.
