Requirements
  • M.D. or D.O. degree.
  • Active and unrestricted license to practice medicine in Iowa and/or South Dakota is required within 3 months from date of hire OR an administrative license; must be licensed in the state in which you reside. In the meantime, while obtaining license, the incumbent will participate in training, provide operational guidance and advice, and participate in projects as assigned while licensure is pending approval.
  • Current Board Certification approved by the American Board of Medical Specialties or American Osteopathic Association.
  • 3-5 years of Utilization Management experience in Commercial programs at a large and complex managed care organization.
  • Masterful at delivering timely UM decisions based on evidence, cogent clinical reasoning, benefit information, applicable policies, and other relevant information.
  • Demonstrated formal or informal leadership experience.
  • Strong interpersonal skills are mandatory, including clear and concise written and verbal communication. Inquisitive nature, enthusiastic by developing and enacting new processes.
  • Proven ability to set clear goals/expectations and motivates teams to achieve success with an eye toward promoting a culture of collegiality and excellence.
  • Demonstrated sense of ownership, drive and initiative to continuously improve outcomes.
  • Serve as change champion to inspire and influence stakeholders to achieve an organization initiative.
  • Track record of teamwork including sharing accountability, influencing without direct authority, effectively listening to others, and effectively leading cross-functional teams to deliver results.
  • General understanding of medical policy development, including the need as a health insurer to establish a balance within policy of the appropriate level or care for an individual and the overall population of covered members.
  • Demonstrated domain knowledge and ability to be conversant with interpretation and application of data and analysis at the highest level and broadest scope. Possesses superior analytical skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications – e.g., Word, Outlook.
Responsibilities
  • Lead Utilization Management initiatives and guide the strategic direction for UM initiatives at Wellmark.
  • Serve as Wellmark's subject matter expert on effective and efficient processes to reduce overuse and improve quality for members.
  • Strategically collaborate with the Health Services team and across the organization to develop and maintain accountability for initiatives to reduce overuse with results validated by Wellmark’s analytical team and grounded in evidence-based care.
  • Build internal and external relationships and trust essential for success.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and development for team members; set clear expectations and foster a team-centric work environment.
  • Be a role model in behaviors that demonstrate Wellmark’s Leader Success Expectations and inclusion.
  • Manage demands of UM and appeals case reviews, while also driving employee engagement and collaboration among team and cross-functional partners.
  • Pivot between performing UM activities and leading high-level initiatives and new total cost of care initiatives.
  • Pursue opportunities to create impactful work from the ground up.
  • Travel expectations: First 6 months every other week in Des Moines, IA; after 6 months quarterly in Des Moines, IA; additional travel as needed.

  • Board certified in Internal Medicine.
  • Experience working in a Hospitalist capacity.
  • Involvement in transformational health care initiatives/projects.

Knoxville Community School District receives Grant from The Wellmark Foundation to bring new mental and Behavioral Health services to students. * Posted By: Clayton Sampson * January 15, 2026 @ 4:46 am * Today's Local News The Knoxville Community School District has received a grant from The Wellmark Foundation to bring new mental and behavioral health services to students. The Knoxville Community School District announced that beginning with the 2025-2026 school year, students will have access to in-person therapy and Classroom Clinic, a telehealth service that connects families, schools and mental health professionals to provide personalized mental and behavioral health support for students. "Thanks to the generous support of the Wellmark Foundation, our students will have expanded access to high-quality behavioral health services that meet them where they are - both in person at school and through telehealth," said Superintendent Cassi Pearson. " This grant allows us to strengthen proactive supports, build healthy habits, and equip students with the skills they need to manage challenges, succeed academically, and thrive both in and beyond the classroom." Classroom Clinic, a school-based telehealth company, collaborates with school districts to provide timely and convenient access to youth mental health care. Its services include telepsychiatry, provided by Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners, and teletherapy, from licensed mental health counselors. By introducing in-person therapy and Classroom Clinic, students at West and Northstar can access services for their mental and behavioral health similar to how they can visit the school nurse for physical health care. The new mental and behavioral health services are possible, in part, by a three-year School-Centered Behavioral Health Grant from The Wellmark Foundation. The Wellmark Foundation's School-Centered Behavioral Health Grant is available for eligible rural Iowa schools that want to establish lasting mental and behavioral health services for Iowa youth.
