Requirements

Responsibilities
  • Global newsroom (North America and International); includes news/live, all vertical desks & enterprise department
  • Audio & video editorial teams, including Tifo in the UK
  • Newsroom Talent & Development/DE&I
  • Audience and Programming (includes search and social)
  • Protect and maintain the independence and excellence of the company's journalism
  • Managerial oversight of the company's 400+-person newsroom, audience and programming operation globally
  • Attract and recruit the best talent in sports journalism; retain existing reporting talent including contract renewals and managing relationships with agents; and ensure DE&I goals are being met or exceeded
  • Oversee the day-to-day and long-range news/coverage strategy across company's beat, live/news, and enterprise teams. Lead the effort to expand the current report into one that is a primary, indispensable news source for sports fans
  • Oversee and unlock the potential of the newly formed audience team, responsible for creating an audience and coverage strategy that helps maximize the reach and impact of the company's journalism
  • Interface with The New York Times staff to draw on its expertise in order to support the building of a world class editorial operation, including in areas of live journalism, data visualization, talent development and more
  • Represent the newsroom at the executive level, with external stakeholders and partners and with the company's parent company
  • Partner with commercial, growth, and product teams to help the company achieve its subscription and commercial revenue and business objectives
  • Uphold and evolve newly revised editorial standards
  • Create an inclusive, learning based newsroom culture. Improve day-to-day communication with staff, train people managers on best practices, set clear vision and expectations with staff, and facilitate development opportunities. Be an accessible, visible, accountable leader to editorial employees across North America and the UK
  • Partner with Strategy & Finance teams to ensure newsroom budgets are met (i.e., comp., travel, freelancers, photography, vendors) and engage collaboratively on long- range strategic roadmap
  • Build and maintain primary relationships with NABJ, AAJA, AWSM, NLGJA, NAHJ, APSE, etc, including maintaining an active presence in the sports journalism industry writ large
