Expeditors posts 51% earnings jump to $2.03 per share, but air freight and customs tailwinds may not last

Expeditors International of Washington reported second-quarter 2026 results with diluted earnings per share jumping 51% to $2.03. Net earnings rose 45% to $266 million, whilst revenue climbed 32% to $3.5 billion. The logistics company saw double-digit revenue growth across customs brokerage, Transcon, distribution, and order management. Airfreight tonnage rose 14% year over year, driven by AI hyperscaler demand and North Asian e-commerce. Ocean freight volumes increased 7% versus the first quarter. However, management noted some tailwinds appear temporary. Elevated air freight rates stemmed from Middle East conflict disruptions. Customs brokerage growth was partly fueled by a temporary surge in IEEPA-related filings. Expeditors returned $461 million to shareholders through buybacks and dividends during the quarter. The company announced a $25 million technology restructuring expected to trim annual costs by roughly $50 million.

Expeditors International cuts 230 tech jobs, abandoning longstanding no-layoff policy

Expeditors International, a Washington-based freight forwarder, is cutting 230 employees by the end of the year, marking a departure from its longstanding no-layoff policy. The reductions affect the company's US global technology department across five offices in Washington state. According to a WARN notice filed Monday, the Seattle office will lose 68 employees, Federal Way 66, and Lynnwood 59. Separations began 8 August and will be finalised by 31 December. The cuts represent 15.4% of Expeditors' information systems branch, which employed 1,498 workers as of 31 March, and 1.1% of the company's total 20,361 staff. Affected positions include software developers, quality assurance engineers, project managers and business analysts. The company recently updated its corporate history page to describe its "short-term no layoff policy" rather than simply "no layoff policy".
