Public Health Apprentice

Brent Council is committed to the continued expansion and development of all apprenticeship programmes for our residents. There is no age limit on an apprenticeship. An apprenticeship can be used for people starting out on their work life journey at the age of 16 or those changing a career for a different working life.  

Brief description of the role

Our Apprenticeship scheme provides a perfect way to earn a wage while you gain vital work experience and a nationally recognised qualification. You will be fully supported and mentored through your apprenticeship and be given protected time to attend training and complete your course work. The scheme is designed for people who are living and entitled to work in England and are not in full-time education. 

As an apprentice, you will: 

• Join Public Health and work as part of a national workforce that strives to help people and communities to maximise their potential for a healthy, happy and productive life, to live healthier for longer. 
• Learn the skills identified in the Public Health Skills and Knowledge Framework (2016) from experts in the field, both in theory and practice.
• Combine traditional academic learning with work-based learning through employment in a public health role.
• Be paid a LLW salary whilst you train and attend university.
• Work proactively to make a positive contribution to the delivery of the service. This will include working flexibly and positively to achieve the objectives of the Council.
• Collaborate and share knowledge with all colleagues to create and support effective and productive working relationships.
• Work under the Council’s performance management scheme and will be expected to develop, in conjunction with their line manager, their key result areas, and personal development plan.
• Be expected to work outside of normal working hours on occasions (08.00 to 18.00). This may include working at weekends.

Requirements

• You must be a resident in Brent 
• You must have an English and Maths GCSE L4 or grade C and above.
• Good IT skills including knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint is desirable.

The Apprenticeship

Public health practitioner - integrated degree / Skills England

Simultaneously undertaking a comprehensive study programme towards the Level 6 degree apprenticeship.  

You will gain valuable knowledge and skills which will be an asset to the council and your career. 

Our apprenticeship scheme offers significant assistance with training and provides the opportunity to improve skills for future career opportunities. 

The training for this role will be in association with the Coventry University.

Please note there is an end-point assessment at the end of this apprenticeship, which is carried out by an independent assessor and will include:  an exam, a log book and a panel interview.  

Upon completion of the apprenticeship, the apprentice will gain a BSc (Hons) degree as a Public Health Practitioner.

Successful completion will enable you to submit a Public Health Practitioner portfolio.
