Requirements
  • Paralegal certification, completion of an authorized paralegal program, or a bachelor's degree approved by the American Bar Association.
  • Two years of litigation paralegal experience.
  • E-discovery certification or demonstrated skill with e-discovery software.
Responsibilities
  • Manage litigation files throughout the lifecycle from case initiation and discovery through trial preparation, settlement, or final disposition.
  • Create, organize, maintain, and track electronic and physical case files, matter-critical information, and deadlines.
  • Conduct initial case research and gather, organize, and track documents for County attorneys.
  • Develop case chronologies and timelines from evidentiary materials.
  • Coordinate witness identification, interviews, depositions, preparation sessions, mediations, arbitrations, and trials.
  • Draft answers, affirmative defenses, motions, declarations, orders, subpoenas, pleadings, correspondence, and communications.
  • File, distribute, and serve pleadings and exhibits with courts, opposing parties, court staff, and attorneys.
  • Maintain attorney calendars and coordinate meetings, court dates, witnesses, court reporters, videographers, investigators, and client representatives.
  • Create and maintain templates for legal correspondence and case pleadings.
  • Provide litigation support, troubleshoot document management systems, and train team members on those systems.
  • Conduct cite-checking and proofread legal documents using Bluebook citation standards.
  • Assess gaps in legal technology and workflows, research solutions, and navigate procurement and approval processes to implement improvements.
  • Research case facts, legal issues, federal, state, and local laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Research criminal and judicial systems and networks to obtain police reports and discoverable information.
  • Prepare legal research memoranda, position summaries, and deposition summaries for attorneys.
  • Draft and issue legal hold notices across County departments when potential litigation is identified.
  • Obtain documents responsive to litigation claims and discovery requests in collaboration with County departments.
  • Coordinate, draft, and track discovery requests and responses, including analyzing opposing counsel's requests and preparing rule-based responses and objections.
  • Review documents to identify case facts and issues, define review protocols, manage review assignments, and meet discovery deadlines.
  • Use e-discovery software to organize documents, develop search queries, generate Bates-stamped productions, and maintain document and privilege logs.
  • Perform quality control of document productions, including privilege and confidentiality checks, redactions, formatting, and metadata verification.
  • Prepare trial documents, including case statements, trial memoranda, motions in limine, jury instructions, deposition clips and indexes, expert contracts, evidence binders, exhibits, exhibit lists, and subpoenas.
  • Create, organize, exchange, and manage trial exhibits and notebooks, annotate depositions, and coordinate witnesses for trial testimony.
  • Attend trials and coordinate witnesses, exhibits, technical support, admitted exhibits, and juror access during deliberations.
  • Set up and coordinate trial technology, including court reporters, videos, projectors, televisions, deposition clips, and demonstrative exhibits.
  • Provide guidance on legal procedures and respond to witness questions about discovery, hearings, depositions, mediation, arbitration, and trial.
