Purpose
The Attorney is responsible for advising and educating students on legal matters, such as landlord/tenant contracts. The Attorney will collaborate with other local legal resources, including the University of Texas at Austin Law School, to address a variety of needs. Please note that the primary function is empowering the students to address their needs, not direct representation.
Responsibilities
Direct Service:
- Meet with students for counseling and problem-solving of legal matters, provide resources and assistance with document preparation, and referral to outside attorneys when appropriate.
Outreach:
- Conduct outreach programming on legal services program as well as a variety of relevant legal topics. Serve on various committees and work groups within the department and the Division of Student Affairs as requested or invited.
Program Oversight:
- Work with the Associate Dean over the Support portfolio to develop a budget, conduct assessment, and maintain legal resource information for website and printed material. Hire, train, and supervise a Law Clerk to assist with the operations.
- Coordinate the processing of open record requests for the Office of the Dean of Students.
Required Qualifications
Juris Doctor, LLP, or LLM degree; have an active license to practice law and be in good standing with the State Bar of Texas. Three years relevant full-time experience of practicing law.
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
Five years of relevant experience in landlord-tenant disputes and/or misdemeanor criminal offenses. Experience with the Texas Public Information Act. Demonstrated skill in developing and implementing outreach programming. Experience providing legal advice in a college setting.
Salary Range
$80,000 + depending on qualifications
Working Conditions
Work in standard office conditions. Repetitive use of a keyboard. This is an on-campus position, located in Austin, Texas.
Work Shift
Work location is on The University of Texas at Austin's main campus and is in person 30 hours a week. Regular and punctual attendance at the workplace is required.

Retirement Plan Eligibility:
The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
