Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent education is required.
  • Three years of hospitality or industry operations experience with two years of progressive lead or supervisory experience are required; Houston Methodist employees may qualify with three years in Houston Methodist food service and one year demonstrating progressive informal leadership experience.
  • A Food Handler Permit from an accredited course approved by the Texas Department of State Health Services or the American National Standards Institute, or a Certified Food Manager credential, is required.
  • The Certified Food Manager credential must be obtained within 90 days and renewed every five years.
  • Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English is required to perform essential job functions affecting patient or employee safety and security.
  • The role requires the ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, family members, and coworkers using a customer-service focus and positive language.
  • Working knowledge of food information software systems such as CBORD and related peripheral equipment is required.
  • The role requires the ability to organize and execute logical work sequences, make decisions using relevant information, perform simple mathematical calculations, and work cooperatively across organizational levels.
  • Knowledge of computers, word-processing software, and spreadsheet software such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel is required.
  • Familiarity with basic food-service management software processes and adherence to Food and Nutrition Services appearance standards are required.
Responsibilities
  • Assist in operating Food and Nutrition Services as the lead staff member for an assigned area.
  • In the absence of the Manager or Coordinator, assist with employee scheduling and correct customer-service problems involving patients, staff, and visitors.
  • Direct food-service duties including tray assembly, simple food preparation, customer service, station replenishment, cash handling, and food-cart transportation.
  • Communicate workplace hazards to peers and management and follow procedures for equipment cleaning, work-area sanitation, and assigned special cleaning.
  • Identify, anticipate, and resolve patient and visitor issues while providing a professional and compassionate customer-service experience.
  • Assist management with employee training, food-service operations, service standards, menus, cashier functions, and sanitation.
  • Work across kitchen areas, lead staff members during scheduled shifts, monitor server activities, and fill in as necessary.
  • Expedite patient trays during peak periods and perform all functions on the tray line.
  • Work in retail, production, and culinary areas as assigned, and complete ordering and inventory activities.
  • Maintain service standards, greet customers, remain available during peak periods, and resolve service issues.
  • Participate in quality and performance-improvement programs and conduct safety and sanitation inspections.
  • Ensure compliance with local food ordinances and maintain serving and dining areas in excellent condition.
  • Assist with personnel-record documentation, provide input for merit evaluations, conduct team huddles in management's absence, and provide required in-services and training.
  • Assist the Manager with inventory and ordering, monitor budget compliance, and prepare product-usage and financial reports.
  • Monitor cashiers and cash handlers, reconcile cash deposits when necessary, and complete financial reports while maintaining financial controls.
  • Review charge tickets, charge cost centers accurately, complete month-end billing and financials, and maintain relationships with Financial Accounting.
  • Maintain operational reports, receive and check supplies, and sign and submit invoices as needed.
  • Use resources cost-effectively, manage time independently, minimize overtime, prioritize daily tasks, and assist coworkers.
  • Identify process-improvement solutions, pursue self-development, complete career discussions, and maintain the My Development Plan.
