What critics are saying

  • Gross margin fell to 10.2% in Q3 2026 as costs outran pricing.

  • Its mostly U.S. manufacturing insulates it from import competition and tariff volatility.
  • Warren consolidation and EWP integration strengthen scale across welded wire reinforcement.

Insteel Industries Q3 earnings fall to $9M as higher costs offset price increases

Insteel Industries reported third-quarter 2026 net earnings of $9 million, or $0.46 per share, down from $15.2 million, or $0.78 per share, in the prior year quarter. The decline came despite higher average selling prices and improved shipment activity, which were offset by increased costs. Third-quarter shipments rose 1.7% year-over-year, supported by infrastructure activity, though private non-residential construction remained soft. Average selling prices increased 8.1% from the prior year quarter and 2.3% sequentially. Wet weather and project delays, including data centre-related projects, moderated shipment pace during the quarter. Company executives characterised these delays as timing-related rather than signs of weakening demand. Customer sentiment remains positive across key markets, supporting the company's outlook.

US tariff shifts boost Insteel Industries and Duluth Trading as import costs reshape retail

The 2025-2026 tariff regime, including a 10% baseline on most imports and reciprocal tariffs on China reaching 145%, has fundamentally altered competitive dynamics in consumer goods. Companies with domestic supply chains are gaining structural advantages. Insteel Industries, America's largest manufacturer of steel wire reinforcing products, is benefiting from Section 232 tariffs on derivative products, which have caused imports to decline sharply. The company operates almost entirely domestically, with only 10% of revenue exposed to imports, positioning it well for infrastructure investment tailwinds. Duluth Trading Co. reported gross margin expansion of 890 basis points in Q4 whilst absorbing over $7 million in tariff costs. The company's direct-to-factory sourcing initiative has reduced per-unit costs by eliminating middlemen.

Insteel reports Q2 earnings of $0.27 per share amid weather disruptions and project delays

Insteel Industries reported second-quarter net earnings of $5.2 million, or $0.27 per diluted share, down from $10.2 million, or $0.52 per share, in the prior year period. The decline was attributed to severe winter weather disruptions, lower spreads and higher conversion costs. Shipments fell 5.9% year-over-year but rose 6.9% sequentially from the first quarter. CEO H.O. Woltz III said prolonged winter weather across most markets reduced construction activity and delayed projects, though he maintained the underlying business upturn remains intact. Average selling prices increased 14.2% year-over-year, driven by pricing actions to offset raw material costs and tariffs. Steel wire rod prices rose $90 per tonne during the quarter. The company said April shipments are trending above forecasted levels.
