Requirements
  • A nurse practitioner must be a graduate of a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education accredited nursing program with a Master's Degree in Nursing.
  • A nurse practitioner must hold national certification from a recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse certification center.
  • A nurse practitioner must be licensed or eligible for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.
  • A physician assistant must hold a Bachelor's Degree as a Physician Assistant.
  • A physician assistant must graduate from an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant-approved physician assistant training program.
  • A physician assistant must be certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
  • A physician assistant must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Physicians or West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
  • An American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification is required, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the department's discretion.
  • The APP must demonstrate proficiency with computers.
  • The APP must have strong communication skills.
Responsibilities
  • Manage comprehensive and individualized care for physical medicine and rehabilitation and Neuro Rehabilitation patients and their families in the ambulatory setting.
  • Complete daily rounds and consults or pre-procedural and surgical evaluations, as applicable.
  • Complete integrated assessments.
  • Order additional tests or consults in collaboration with physical medicine and rehabilitation or Neuro Rehabilitation faculty, or according to established clinical guidelines and protocols.
  • Perform diagnostic tests and communicate their results according to established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
  • Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal patient evaluation findings.
  • Perform comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.
  • Facilitate patient disposition by coordinating appropriate services, tests, and follow-up appointments in the clinic.
  • Develop individualized plans of care, including teaching, discharge and follow-up planning, and referrals to other healthcare team members.
  • Identify unstable or complex patient-care situations and facilitate appropriate intervention in the clinic or hospital setting.
  • Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
  • Evaluate patients and coordinate follow-up procedures and tests in the ambulatory setting.
  • Assist in collecting outcome measures.
  • Apply critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning to clinical decision-making and management of patients' and families' individual needs.
  • Use patient-care equipment safely.
  • Base decisions and actions on relevant scientific principles, established standards of care, and research findings.
  • Provide education to nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community using appropriate teaching and learning strategies.
  • Document plans of care, interventions, and evaluations clearly and concisely in the medical record according to approved policies and compliance standards.
  • Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve patient outcome-based improvements in care.
  • Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in physical medicine and rehabilitation and Neuro Rehabilitation practice that improve patient outcomes.
  • Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to solve problems and provide professional support.
  • Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education.
  • Promote and practice innovation in the expanded role of care delivery to physical medicine and rehabilitation and Neuro Rehabilitation patients and families in inpatient and ambulatory settings.
  • Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
  • Document hours and submit billing reports, as appropriate.
  • Review and interpret pediatric physical medicine and rehabilitation data from patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes as necessary.
  • Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
  • Assist physical medicine and rehabilitation faculty, administrators, and directors in collecting outcome measures.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in physical medicine and rehabilitation or Neuro Rehabilitation is preferred.
  • Family Nurse Practitioners are preferred, but Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioners will be considered.
  • A Master's-level degree as a Physician Assistant is preferred.
