Requirements
  • A B.S. degree in Civil, Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, or another related discipline is required.
  • Machinery-background candidates require a B.S. degree in Marine, Piping, Fire-Fighting, or Mechanical Engineering or another related discipline.
  • University graduates and experienced industry engineers must have graduated from university and have a minimum of five years of related experience.
  • Machinery-background candidates must have at least ten years of related engineering experience in a shipyard, design or consulting office, shipping or oil company, or classification society, or two years as an Engineer II.
  • Machinery-background candidates must hold a seagoing engineering license or professional or chartered engineer license.
  • Candidates must have advanced practical industry-related experience.
  • Candidates must know applicable Rules and Regulations and their impact on applications and interpretations.
  • Candidates must know company business policies and procedures.
  • Candidates must have the human-relations skills necessary to maintain positive client contacts and provide leadership and motivation to subordinate staff and peers.
  • Candidates must be able to identify, analyze, and solve complex or unique engineering problems.
  • Candidates must be able to undertake short- and long-term planning for efficient and effective scheduling of work assignments.
  • Candidates must communicate effectively in English verbally and in writing.
  • Candidates must be able to obtain a working knowledge of the ABS Health, Safety, Quality, and Environmental Management Systems.
Responsibilities
  • Provide day-to-day leadership to assigned Engineering staff, assign projects to Engineers, monitor project progress, ensure high-quality service, and maintain good customer relations.
  • Devise new approaches to encountered problems and recommend changes to methods, procedures, or designs when necessary.
  • Monitor the technical quality, content, consistency, continuity, and timeliness of action on assigned projects.
  • Apply extensive knowledge of engineering principles and practices across broad technical areas, perform engineering reviews and analyses when necessary, and review other engineers' work while providing guidance and training.
  • Participate in developing and changing Rules and advise assigned staff on applying Rules and Regulations.
  • Prepare written responses to clients according to established procedures.
  • Maintain liaison with engineering specialists internally and externally.
  • Monitor the performance, development potential, and training needs of assigned engineers.
  • Keep management informed of manpower needs.
  • Develop or assist in developing qualification statements, proposals, bids, and other presentation materials.
Desired Qualifications
  • An M.S. degree is preferred.
  • Professional or chartered engineer license is preferred.
