Steel Dynamics stock and the onshore Low Carbon Steel shift. September 05, 2026 Hyundai Steel and POSCO just committed $5.8b to a low carbon steel mill in Louisiana, which quietly reshapes who supplies the metal that goes into North American cars. That kind of onshore shift can create winners and leave others on the sidelines. This article walks through three stocks linked to this news, how their exposure might help or hurt, and what that could mean for your portfolio decisions. The three stocks covered below are just a starting sample. The full screen surfaced 7 more companies with equally compelling low carbon and auto steel narratives that are not included in this article. If you want to identify potential leaders for this onshore shift, head straight to the North American Low-Carbon Steel & Auto Buyers screener. Overview: Steel Dynamics is a U.S. steel producer and metal recycler that uses scrap-fed electric arc furnaces to supply lower carbon flat rolled and long steel products to construction, automotive, manufacturing and other industrial customers, with an integrated recycling and fabrication footprint across the country. It also produces non residential building components and recycled aluminum sheet, giving buyers of domestic and automotive grade steel and aluminum a vertically linked supplier. Operations: Steel Dynamics generates about US$14.7b of revenue from Steel Operations, US$4.5b from Metals Recycling, US$1.7b from Other activities, US$1.5b from Steel Fabrication and just over US$1.0b from Aluminum, with roughly US$19.2b of its US$20.5b total revenue earned in the United States. Market Cap: US$35.3b Steel Dynamics provides direct exposure to U.S. lower carbon, onshore steel at scale, with its scrap based EAF mills and recycling network closely aligned to automakers and industrial customers that are under rising emissions pressure. Recent earnings strength, tariff support and analyst interest indicate that the market is paying attention. At the same time, the stock still carries typical steel cycle risks related to construction and auto demand, as well as capital spending on new aluminum and decarbonization projects that could affect cash flow if execution slips. For investors watching Hyundai and POSCO commit billions to U.S. green steel, Steel Dynamics is already positioned in that same current. The balance between these opportunities and risks is where the core investment debate begins. Steel Dynamics appears to be a pure play on low carbon, onshore steel, but the real story may be how its earnings mix and investment plans line up for the next phase. Get the 2 key rewards and 1 important warning sign Overview: Ferroglobe produces silicon metal and manganese based alloys that are essential ingredients in steelmaking and aluminum, feeding into construction, auto, solar and electronics supply chains, which ties it indirectly into the push for more domestic and potentially lower carbon steel production in North America. Market Cap: US$846.5 million Ferroglobe provides exposure to the alloy side of the low carbon steel story, rather than the mills themselves. The company supplies silicon and manganese products used to clean up and strengthen steel, which becomes more important as North American producers invest in electric furnaces and onshore capacity. There is a clear tension here. Trade protections and potential antidumping actions can support pricing and local volumes, yet the business has a history of losses and relies heavily on policy and disciplined global supply to improve margins. Alongside this, the company has provided small but ongoing shareholder returns through dividends and buybacks, and it has planned U.S. expansion projects. Overall, this is a stock where the potential upside depends on how confidently investors view the interaction of policy, supply discipline and profitability. Ferroglobe sits where policy, pricing power and U.S. expansion plans intersect, yet the market may not be pricing that mix with much confidence. See how the analysis report for Ferroglobe reframes the risk reward story right at the alloy level. Overview: POSCO Holdings is a Korean integrated steel producer that manufactures and trades a wide range of steel products for auto, construction and industrial customers, while also expanding into battery materials and energy related businesses. Alongside its core steel operations, the company is building positions in secondary battery materials, eco friendly infrastructure and energy solutions across global markets. Operations: POSCO Holdings generates most of its revenue from Steel at ₩59,912,489 million and Eco Friendly Infrastructure Sector (Trade) at ₩44,664,483 million, with smaller contributions from Eco Friendly Infrastructure Sector (Erection) at ₩6,990,477 million, Eco Friendly Infrastructure (Logistics, Etc.) at ₩3,858,420 million, Materials of Secondary Battery at ₩3,675,548 million and Other at ₩1,657,165 million, offset by a segment adjustment of ₩48,145,920 million. Market Cap: ₩25.5 trillion POSCO Holdings gives you a different angle on the North American low carbon and auto steel story because it is a global integrated producer that is building EAF and hydrogen based HyREX technology at home. The company is also using a new U.S. electric furnace project with Hyundai to work around steep tariffs that have capped its direct exports to the region at about 2% of volume. That mix of green steel investment, a growing battery materials arm and active debt and portfolio management could matter if lithium, EV demand and premium steel grades gain traction. Investors still have to weigh trade barriers, capital intensive projects and historically low returns on equity. The key consideration is how much of that transition is already reflected in POSCO Holdings valuation and earnings trajectory. POSCO Holdings is working to bring together green steel, U.S. capacity and battery materials into a single narrative, but the key question is how that combination might reshape growth. See the analyst forecasts for POSCO Holdings to gauge where expectations could be out of sync. Seeking alternatives before the crowd moves. Fresh ideas do not stay under the radar for long.
