Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • A June 2026 $24 million gift funds AI leadership, scholarships, and professorships.
  • RIT reported a 20% undergraduate application increase for fall 2026, strengthening selectivity.
  • NSF-backed STELLAR and quantum awards expanded in 2026, deepening grants and employer partnerships.

What critics are saying

  • International enrollment fell 300 students in 2025-2026, crushing tuition revenue.
  • Federal research cuts already canceled awards; a 15% indirect-cost cap slashes FY2026 research margins.
  • If AI-institute fundraising stalls before early 2027, RIT loses momentum against rival tech universities.

What makes Rochester Institute of Technology unique

  • RIT combines co-op education with STEM depth and applied industry training.
  • RIT leads imaging science and detector research, including NASA Roman Telescope work, August 2026.
  • RIT anchors Rochester’s quantum and laser ecosystem through RoQNET and STELLAR, 2026.

Kanvas Biosciences has raised $48 million in a Series A round co-led by DCVC and Lions Capital, bringing total funding to $78 million. The spatial biology company will use the funds to conduct clinical trials for KAN-001, its lead immuno-oncology drug candidate designed to improve immunotherapy efficacy in solid organ cancer patients. The live biotherapeutic product addresses limitations of fecal microbiota transplants by offering safer, more scalable treatment for patients who don't respond to immune checkpoint inhibitors. Kanvas has developed a platform that spatially maps microbial and host cells, enabling manufacture of complex microbial consortia to restore microbiome health.
