What believers are saying

  • 2024/25 portfolio returned 10.2%, lifting funds to £35.7 billion and supporting expansion.
  • New 2026 calls fund five evidence-synthesis hubs and infectious-disease trials across LMICs.
  • Thailand and Malawi core funding renewed through 2032, signaling long-horizon commitment and stability.

What critics are saying

  • Sole dependence on investment returns exposes 2026 hiring and grant growth to market drawdowns.
  • Heavy UK concentration, 72.5% of grant value in 2024/25, narrows global credibility.
  • Conflict-of-interest scrutiny around COVID-era grants can poison partnerships and regulatory access by 2027.

What makes Wellcome unique

  • £39.9 billion portfolio funds £1.9 billion annual charitable spend without fundraising dependence.
  • 2723 active grants across 133 countries give Wellcome unmatched global health research reach.
  • ESIC and AI-enabled evidence synthesis position Wellcome as a standards-setter, not just a grantmaker.
