- A High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent is required.
- A minimum of three years of experience as a receptionist or secretary is required, preferably in a medical setting.
- Provide customer service to patients, families, and staff while maintaining a welcoming and friendly attitude.
- Communicate relevant information, including changes, admissions, and discharges, to relevant departments and involved clinicians in a clear and timely manner.
- Receive information from physicians, Care Management, Care Center staff, Patient Financial Service, and clinicians from various disciplines, and accurately relay it to Nursing Department staff and others as appropriate.
- Utilize the electronic medical record system to enter required information, review new orders, and print necessary information.
- Check that pertinent information, including the medical record number, JHH number, problem list, patient height and weight, assigned registered nurse and provider, and name alerts, is entered in the electronic medical record system, and alert the Charge Nurse about missing or incomplete information.
- Perform admission and discharge clerical procedures, including receiving and verifying new patient identification bracelets, ensuring correct name plates are affixed to patients’ rooms, assembling and maintaining current and accurate patient charts, and requesting records from the Health Information Management Department.
- Schedule and confirm patient appointments, complete appropriate forms, and schedule follow-up appointments ordered within the month after discharge.
- Arrange transportation for patients to outside appointments.
- Maintain a neat and orderly nurse’s station.
- Perform patient chart filing, cull excess material as needed, and maintain the correct and neat organization of charts.
- Triage incoming calls, receive messages from staff, distribute mail, and transmit accurate and timely information to the appropriate staff.
- Operate and manage communication technology used on the unit as needed, including the nurse call system.
- Maintain general office equipment, maintain adequate and appropriate supplies, and stock department supplies as needed.
- Experience as a receptionist or secretary in a medical setting is preferred.

August 24, 2026 The Kennedy Krieger Institute and Maryland Healthcare Ethics Committee Network (MHECN) are jointly hosting an Ethics Conference from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Nov. 6. The live, interactive virtual workshop is intended for clinical social workers, ethics consultants, ethics committee members, care coordinators, behavioral health clinicians, and health care professionals involved in ethics consultation or documentation. The keynote speaker will be Steve O'Neill, LICSW, BCD, JD, director of behavioral health, OpenNotes Program, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, who is a longtime faculty member of the Harvard Medical School and Simmons University School of Social Work. MHECN is a membership organization, established by the Health Law Program at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law.
